Area Commodity Cookery Contest
St. Martin Parish 4-H members displayed the culinary customs of their families as they competed in the area 4-H Commodity Cookery contest held in Crowley. They earned the privilege of representing St. Martin Parish by winning the parish contest which was held in November. Using local agricultural commodities of sugar, rice, seafood and beef they prepared tasty dishes which competed with entries from nine southwest Louisiana parishes. While the entries were being judged, participants completed a nutrition education program in which they learned about proper diets in relation to portion control, the types of fats, and more.
Named first place winners were Garret Chiasson of St. Bernard School with his Shrimp Casserole and Taylor Courville, Breaux Bridge High School, who entered the quick and easy beef category with Tortilla Soup. Third place winners were Leah Massa, At Large 4-H club, Crab Dip; Rachael Guidry, St. Bernard School, main dish rice entry of Crawfish Opelousas; Garrett Richard, At Large 4-H Club, sugar entry – Fig Ice Cream. Blue ribbon winners include from Cecilia Junior High: Leigh Ann Hebert, Jamani Barber and Catherine Blanchard; Teche Elementary: Erin Blanchard and Kelee Theriot; St. Bernard School: Garret Chiasson;St. Martinville High: Jacob Albert. Red Ribbon winner was Gabrielle DeVillier of Parks Middle School.
