Research Associate

(Giant Salvinia Biological Control)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)

WORK LOCATION: Department of Entomology, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, La.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The successful candidate will be responsible for rearing and monitoring populations of salvinia weevils (Cyrtobagous salviniae) in Louisiana. Responsibilities will include collection of weevils in South America or Australia, maintenance of colonies in quarantine, and mass rearing of weevils in outdoor tanks. The associate will follow an established quality control protocol for the mass rearing operation. The associate will leadseveral research projects such as improving mass rearing techniques, comparing the cold tolerance of populations, and developing weevil release programs for central and northern Louisiana. The associate will work closely with team leaders of LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, USDA-APHIS, and overseas cooperators.Physical activities related to this job may include but not limited to periodic lifting of 10 lbs., and driving state trucks and boats. The successful candidate will travel overseas for periods of less than ten days, and prepare quarterly reports on the status of the colonies and outcomes of experiments.For more information about biological control of giant salvinia, please visit:

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Entomology, experience working with insects, aquatic habitats, insect colony maintenance, and data collection. Experience working in quarantine or boating, and knowledge of Spanish are preferred. We seek a candidate with a high standard in scientific writing and oral communication. A valid passport and driver license are required.
