WORK LOCATION:Botanic Gardens at Burden Center, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will report to the Director of the Botanic Gardens and assist faculty, staff and students with research projects studying urban forests, landscapes, small plot tree plantings and invasive species removal.The Burden Woods serves as a hands-on learning experience for an outdoor classroom and as such the RA will be required to assist with teaching students in Horticulture and Forestry as well as continuing education classes through LDAF. The RA will assist with maintaining the mature trees and planting of new trees in the gardens, arboretum and woodlands. It is the responsibility of this position to assist with identify and care for the needs of all major and ornamental trees to assure proper form and optimum health. This position will also be responsible for supervising student workers.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:A bachelor’s or master’s degree in plant sciences, horticulture, forestry or related discipline from an accredited college or university. Other degree may be accepted with experience or education related to job duties.Registration as a Chemical Applicator and Arborist must be obtained and maintained through proper testing, licensing, and ongoing professional course work. Many aspects of this work require operation and safety of all applicable arborist equipment, climbing activities and the operation of chainsaws and heavy equipment and aerial lifts.
