WORK LOCATION: Franklin and Caldwell parishes.The domicile location is Franklin Parish, Winnsboro, LA. The area to be served is Franklin, and Caldwell parishes which are located in northeast Louisiana. Franklin parish is rich in agriculture and natural resource industries. The parish is home to a diverse variety of crops including corn, cotton, grain sorghum, rice, soybean, pasture and hay. The parish is home to catfish, recreational ponds, beef cattle, horses and sweet potatoes. The population of the parish is approximately 20,785 residents. The parish seat and largest town in the parish is Winnsboro, located 20 miles south of Interstate 20.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Assistant/Associate/Extension Agent (Family and Consumer Sciences) will serve as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) agent and will work under the supervision and direction of the Parish Chair, Regional Director, FCS Regional Coordinator and State SNAP-Ed state office.The agent will provide primary leadership (80%) in planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting nutrition educational programming for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients and other low-income families as well as serving to supervise a nutrition educator (paraprofessional) working in this program. This individual will also have nutrition programming responsibilities (20%) with general AgCenter clientele.
The agent will organize a nutrition advisory committee involving stakeholders, volunteers, and other health professionals to identify the most critical needs in the communities served as well as programs to address those needs.They will be responsible for reporting, in addition to following deadlines, for any other local or state reporting called upon to complete. He/She must be willing to maintain professional competence as a faculty member of the LSU AgCenter and pursue an appropriate area of specialization.The agent is expected to perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor(s).Coordination and collaboration with other LSU AgCenter Research and Extension faculty will be essential.In order to attend and conduct programming to meet the needs of clientele, this position requires overnight travel and work on evenings and weekends.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:A baccalaureate degree in community nutrition, human foods and nutrition, family and consumer sciences, dietetics or closely related field from an accredited college or university is required. A master’s degree in nutrition or health promotion is preferred.Degrees in other fields that relate to the duties of the position may be considered if combined with directly related experience. Must have an undergraduate degree with an overall grade-point average of at least 2.5 (all GPA requirements based on a 4.0 system) and a 3.0 for graduate work attempted, if any, or master’s degree or a current grade-point average of at least 3.0 on at least 12 hours of graduate credit.This applicant must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.Applicant must have knowledge of program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.Experience in recruiting, training and supervising volunteers and paraprofessionals and experience in teaching and applying principles of leadership development to both youth and adults is also desired.Knowledge of public relations and the ability to cope with change are highly desirable characteristics.Ability to work with and through others is essential as is the ability to function with minimum supervision.Successful candidates will exemplify a positive attitude and a passion to improve the lives of others.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided).Satisfactory completion of two specific graduate level extension courses (6 credit hours) is generally required in the first two years of employment.Additionally, a faculty member who does not have a related master’s degree must complete an additional 9 hours of related graduate level coursework in order to be promoted to associate agent and such promotion must occur in the first seven years of employment.An exception is that additional agent experience may be substituted for nine hours of coursework, but not for the two required courses.
