Research Associate

(Part-Time)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)

WORK LOCATION: Department of Plant Pathology & Crop Physiology, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: A part-time research associate is sought to assist with a research program in Mycology. Position responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining laboratory inventory, obtaining quotes and ordering lab supplies, maintenance of fungal culture collections, preparation of microbiological media, operation of autoclave, basic microscopy, DNA extraction, DNA quantification with nanodrop and Qubit, PCR, nucleotide sequence editing and phylogenetic analysis, recognition of common fungal genera in culture, collection of plant material, isolation of endophytic fungi and plant pathogens, establishment and maintenance of field experiments, setting up and monitoring fungal growth rate trials, management of undergraduate researchers, and general laboratory upkeep.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A B.S. degree in Biology or related area is required. Degrees in other fields will be accepted if combined with related work experience. Demonstrated ability working with fungal cultures, including collection, isolation and preservation of endophytic and plant pathogenic fungi; ability to travel long distances and work in the field throughout the year, demonstrated ability with standard field collection and preservation of botanical specimens; experience with DNA sequence editing in Geneious and ability to run basic phylogenetic analyses; experience with laboratory management, including ordering and maintenance of lab inventory, ability to work independently; experience managing undergraduate researchers; good interpersonal skills; ability to enjoy the challenge of working in a program with a diverse range of activities and projects; and ability to successfully work with a diverse, cross-cultural team is also necessary.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
