Summer Camp Lifeguards

DESCRIPTION: The Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center seeks dynamically certified lifeguards to work at our pond and pool as swim instructors and traditional lifeguards. These individuals will serve as lifeguards for all camp waterfront operations; provide constant surveillance of waterfront activities; maintain the cleanliness of the pool and pond area; plan swimming activities at all water areas; and conduct swimming lessons on a daily basis.


  • Assist in swimming and water activity programs
  • Ensure the camp staff and campers are aware and follow safety procedures at all water areas
  • Provides surveillance of pool and pond activities to help prevent injuries
  • Direct and supervise camper behavior to ensure they stay in compliance of water safety rules
  • Teach swim lessons
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the pool and pond area
  • Daily inspection of kayaks, canoes, dock areas, life jackets, and paddles
  • Ensure all boating equipment is secured before leaving the pond area
  • Monitor all water activities to and report all issues, hazards, or concerns to 4-H Camp Coordinator


  • Knowledge of and ability to perform CPR and First Aid procedures and life saving techniques
  • Able to supervise swimmers and provide constant surveillance of pool activities in order to ensure swimmer safety. Effectively respond to emergency rescues when needed
  • Able to enforce all pool rules
  • Able to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth
  • Able to communicate effectively with campers, camp staff, 4-H Agents, and adults
  • Able to react quickly and calmly in emergencies


  • Preferably at least 18 years of age. Junior and Senior level college students preferred
  • Certification as a Lifeguard by a nationally recognized certifying organization (American Lifeguard Association or Red Cross)
  • One-year experience working as a life guard preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Must complete the employee background screening process by LSU AgCenter Human Resource Management


Long periods of standing, sitting, carrying, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate lifeguard equipment are required. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs., or more. Operate daily with exposure to the sun, heat, and other varying environmental conditions.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will commensurate with experience. Housing options are available on site upon request, availability, and job responsibility. Meals and snacks while at camp are also available.

DATE AVAILABLE: May 21- August 1, 2018. Work hours are Monday morning through Thursday evening each week for ten weeks. Camp is not in session the week of June 18-22, 2018. Must attend the required staff training sessions the week of May 14-18, 2018.
