Summer 4-H Camp Track Instructor

(Outdoor Skills - Archery)

WORK LOCATION: Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center located in Pollock, LA

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This individual will serve as the lead instructor who teaches archery and outdoor skills subject matter in a track format to an audience of up to 50 youth at a time, ages 9-12, in a camp setting. This person will be responsible for meeting with two other assigned camp staff before and after track time each day. The instructor will provide safe supervision of youth and support 4-H professionals in conducting meaningful educational experiences to help youth develop life skills. Works under the direct supervision of the 4-H Camp Coordinator, and cooperatively with the Camp Director, to implement all policies and procedures of the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana 4-H Youth Development program.


  • Maintain all archery equipment; including bows, arrows, strings, and targets
  • Prepare detailed lesson plans for at least three 50 min rotations; including rainy day class time instruction in archery and outdoor skills
  • Ensure the security of the archery equipment and range when not in use
  • Conduct daily checks of outdoor skills area and equipment for safety and cleanliness
  • Clean archery range daily keeping it free of hazards and debris
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers are aware and follow all outdoor safety procedures


  • Prefer applicant to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social or Behavioral Sciences, or field related to outdoor skills
  • Must have a 4-H Shooting Sports Archery Instructor Level 1 Certification
  • Must complete the employee background screening process and be approved by LSU AgCenter Human Resource Management
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills and work effectively with youth in group situations
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid. The camp will provide training.


  • Training and experience in teaching archery to youth
  • Desire and ability to work with youth outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups (various ages and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to youth
  • Ability to enforce appropriate safety regulations, emergency procedures, and behavior-management techniques

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary: $3000.00 for the ten-week period. Housing options are available on site subject to availability and job responsibility. Meals and snacks are also available.

DATE AVAILABLE: May 22-August 1 2018. Work hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week from 7:30 am until 12:00 pm, plus prep and clean-up time. The camp is not in session the week of June 18-22, 2018. Must attend required training sessions the week of May 14-18, 2018.
