Summer Camp Nurse

DESCRIPTION: The Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center seeks certified nurses for our residential summer camp located in Pollock, LA. Grant Walker serves as a 4-H summer camp to children 9-12 years of age, and currently in the 4th-6th grade. During any given week, our facility can camp between 400-450 youth.

EXPECTATIONS: Camp Nurses are expected to provide essential medical care, dispense over the counter (OTC) and prescription medication, and provide necessary triage and straightforward diagnosis of injuries/medical problems. Camp Nurses must document all medical care information. The Camp Nurse reports directly to the Camp Director.


  • Assume responsibility and authority for decisions made regarding medical emergencies
  • Dispense medications as prescribed by doctors and as detailed on camper health form
  • Maintain accurate logs of medication dispensing and treatment of injuries/illnesses, including documented incident reports as warranted
  • Responsible for medical supplies and medications stored and locked inside a cabinet in the Infirmary
  • Review camper health forms before camp weeks as needed
  • Conduct onsite medical training for staff as required
  • Meet with Camp Director daily to review camper issues and specific areas of need that may arise
  • Administer over the counter medications as directed
  • Assess campers and staff who are ill or injured
  • Assist is stabilizing campers and staff requiring transportation to the hospital
  • Documentation of all injuries and care rendered. Camp Nurses must document all medication dispensed, any first aid treatment, and all communication with 4-H agents and parents regarding camper health.

QUALIFICATIONS: Current Registered Nurse License or LPN License. One-year professional nursing experience preferred, preferably with youth. Must complete the employee background screening process and be approved by LSU AgCenter Human Resource Management.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Camp Nurses live in a dormitory across the hall from the Infirmary. The dormitory has a private shower, A/C, wireless internet, etc. All meals are provided.

HOURS/SALARY: The Infirmary is staffed 24 hours a day beginning on Monday at 10 a.m. – Friday 9 a.m. Day/Night or shift rotations are available. Salary will commensurate with experience.

DATES AVAILABLE: May 21- August 1, 2018. Work hours are Monday-Friday for the ten-week period. The camp will not be in session the week of June 18-22, 2018. There will be designated training sessions. Date and time will be given upon hire.
