4-H Summer Camp Track Instructor

(Outdoor Skills - Riflery)

WORK LOCATION: Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center is located in Pollock, LA

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This individual will serve as the lead instructor teaching Riflery and outdoor skills subject matter in a track format to an audience of up to 50 youth at a time, ages 9-12. This person will be responsible for meeting with two other assigned camp staff before and after track time each day. The instructor will provide safe supervision of youth and support 4-H professionals in conducting meaningful educational experiences to help youth develop life skills. Works under the direct supervision of the Camp Director to implement all policies and procedures of the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana 4-H Youth Development program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach classes in Riflery using established safety protocols
  • Prepare detailed lesson plans for at least 2.5 hours of instruction, including rainy day class time instruction in Riflery
  • Maintain equipment including guns, ammo, ear and eye protection, and targets
  • Conduct daily cleaning and inspection of range
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers follow safety procedures
  • Other program responsibilities assigned by the Camp Director

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preferred applicant will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social or Behavioral Sciences, or field related to outdoor skills
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have a 4-H Shooting Sports Rifle Instructor Level 1 or NRA certification
  • Must complete the employee background screening process and be approved by LSU AgCenter Human Resource Management
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication, teamwork skills, and work effectively with youth in group situations

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Training and experience in teaching Riflery to youth
  • Desire and ability to work with youth outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups (various ages and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers
  • Ability to enforce safety regulations, emergency procedures, and apply behavior-management techniques

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary: $3000.00 for the ten-week period. Housing options are available on site subject to availability and job responsibility. Meals and snacks while at camp are also available.

DATE AVAILABLE:May 22-August 1, 2018. Work hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week from 7:30 am until 12:00 pm, plus prep and clean-up time. The camp is not in session the week of June 18-22, 2018. Must attend required training sessions the week of May 14-18, 2018.
