Assistant Professor or Instructor
(4-H Youth Development)
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Assistant Professor/Instructor of the Department of 4-H Youth Development in the LSU Agricultural Center.
WORK LOCATION: Department of 4-H Youth Development, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, La.
NATURE OF POSITION: 12-month, Assistant Professor (tenure leading with a Ph.D.) appointment or Instructor (non-tenure, Master’s Degree) with the LSU AgCenter.
GENERAL INFORMATION: The Louisiana State University AgCenter’s 4-H Youth Development program involves a community of young people who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. The program currently engages more than 250,000 diverse youth and nearly 8,000 adult volunteers through various delivery modes including, but not limited to, school clubs, community clubs, school enrichment, after-school care, camping, character development, service-learning programs, special programs and youth boards. This position will consist of a 75% appointment in the 4-H Youth Development Department and a 25% appointment with the College of Agriculture.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will engage volunteers, 4-H professionals, and stakeholders as partners in reaching a diverse population and will oversee the creation of opportunities for young people to develop the sense of belonging, independence, generosity and mastery they need to thrive as contributing citizens of Louisiana and the world. Specific duties will include:
Providing innovative leadership in guiding college and career readiness programs through planning and implementation of goals, strategies, action plans and program evaluations. Providing programming and resources that support youth in making informed decisions about their careers and college path focusing on life skill development, transferable employment skills, and financial literacy. Designing programming that addresses equity, access and promotes opportunities for underserved audiences. Developing relevant subject matter related to professional development for 4-H youth development faculty, program partners in other youth-serving organizations and agencies, and volunteers. Utilizing cutting-edge technology systems such as blogs, instant messaging, cell phone text and voice messaging, podcasts, personal Web pages and other cutting-edge information to deliver research-based information. Providing management for the 4-H Portfolio process that affords youth the opportunity to document their 4-H project work. Reaching underserved audiences with relevant programming to create a culture in Louisiana 4-H that fosters an inclusive environment in which all individuals are accepted, supported and respected as they innovate. Creating and maintaining a working relationship with youth development researchers and with local, state and regional extension faculty and administrators. Reaching out to industry and college partners to support and expand college and career opportunities. Representing the department with LSU AgCenter administration and promoting 4-H youth development with other university units, public and private agencies and stakeholder groups at the local, regional and national levels. Securing external grant funding to support 4-H youth development. Continuing professional development, staying current in research related to youth development and actively participating in professional organizations. Assuming other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: An earned doctoral degree in youth development, human development, education, family and consumer sciences/human ecology, social sciences, communications, community development or a closely related field is preferred. Master’s Degree required. Individual must demonstrate research-based knowledge of positive youth development and scholarly work involving career development, underserved audiences, program implementation and evaluation. Applicant must document success in team building and volunteer development and management. Experience working collaboratively with other youth-serving organizations is highly desirable. A minimum of five years of teaching or program implementation with youth is required. Experience in Cooperative Extension or other non-formal youth development programs with diverse audiences is highly preferred. Successful candidate must demonstrate effective communication skills and basic skills in information technology. Ability to secure outside funding and support from state, federal and other sources is expected.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
