Research Associate

(Invertebrate Molecular Biology/Microbiology)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for continuation of appointment)

WORK LOCATION: Department of Entomology, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, La.

NATURE OF WORK: This position will involve lab management and research related to molecular biology of invertebrates (insects and their meiofaunal food web) and their microbial symbionts. The individual filling this position will be responsible for supporting and conducting scientific research in the laboratory of Dr. Husseneder in the Department of Entomology. This includes insect and food web identification (DNA barcoding), population genetics (microsatellite genotyping, sequencing), microbiology (bacteria and protozoa culture, phage assays), and bioassays (toxicity tests). Duties will include: Conducting bench-level experiments including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, genotyping, sequencing, culture of microorganisms, vector construction, cloning, using mostly commercially available kits, Compilation of experimental data and identification of methodological problems. Must be able to assist with troubleshooting and adjusting experimental protocols to ensure project completion in a timely fashion. Diligent documentation, record-keeping and reporting of experimental data. Consulting with other scientists or scientific literature as needed. Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment (e.g., PCR and qPCR machines, autoclave, Millipore Water system, and freezers), Training of new lab members, supervision of student workers, Regular duties will include maintaining inventory, routine maintenance of lab equipment and laboratory safety, ordering supplies, preparing laboratory reagents, among others.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree with strong background in molecular biology/microbiology or related field, laboratory experience and excellent communication and writing skills. Familiarity with basic molecular biology and sterile techniques plus operation of lab equipment. Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to perform multiple detail-oriented tasks in a reliable fashion. The successful candidate should be highly motivated with excellent organization and time management skills and able to work independently as well as member of a team. Good analytical abilities and ability to prepare written and/or verbal reports on status of research and the technical procedures used, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions to assist with publications.
