WORK LOCATION: Department of Entomology, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA and the USDA Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics, and Physiology Laboratory, Baton Rouge, Louisiana (primary work location).
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The LSU Department of Entomology and the USDA Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Laboratory have established extensive collaboration during the past few years. This position is being advertised for a research associate who will conduct laboratory techniques on projects pertaining to honey bee health. The selected candidate will start as early as September 1, 2017. The position is for one year, with additional years contingent upon funding. Tasks include the following: Execute a wide variety of molecular biology and analytical chemistry techniques. Organize incoming projects from various scientists for analysis. Maintain efficient storage and retrieval for samples both pre- and post-analysis. Prepare a variety of tissue samples and process material for diagnostics of nucleic acids or proteins. Optimize assays used with existing equipment. Calibrate equipment as required. Troubleshoot equipment and processes as needed. Investigate upgrades to methods and equipment that would enhance the repeatability and reproducibility of experimental processes. Maintain lab inventory of reagents and consumables. Prepare Excel spreadsheets to report complete materials and methods and data prior to presentation to relevant SY.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor’s degree is required for this position. Experience working with honey bees is preferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
