Assistant/Associate/Extension Agent

(4-H Youth Development)

WORK LOCATION: The Extension office is located in Edgard, LA. The area to be served is St. John the Baptist Parish, which is located in southeast Louisiana with a population of approximately 45,221 residents. Sugarcane production, along with soybeans and beef cattle, represent the viable agriculture industries. St. John Parish has 12 public and 7 private/parochial schools. The goals of the 4-H Youth Development Program includes increasing youth leadership development and community service learning; strengthening the partnership between 4-H and formal education; and expanding volunteer involvement to increase contact hours per youth.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Assistant/Associate Extension Agent will provide 4-H educational program in leadership, 4-H agricultural/outdoor skill projects and related subjects for youth audiences. This employee will identify, select, recruit, train and involve adult volunteer leaders in conducting programs for targeted youth as well as assist with other 4-H youth-related activities as planned and/or assigned. Program delivery includes 4-H school clubs, project and community clubs, camps, other out of parish opportunities, after school programs, school enrichment, leadership programs, short-term special interest groups and community service learning. In addition, the Agent will maximize the use of the media (including social media) to promote and market high quality research based educational outreach. The agent will be in charge of coordinating the Livestock program as well as the Shooting Sports program. This will include training, workshops and recruiting volunteers for both of these programs. The Extension Agent will work jointly with other faculty and staff members (parish, region and state) with advisory committees in identifying local needs. The Extension Agent will conduct educational workshops, method demonstrations and other teaching activities for volunteers. In order to attend and conduct training to meet the needs of clientele, this position requires some overnight travel and work on evenings and weekends. The incumbent is expected to perform other tasks that may be assigned by supervisor(s) and work cooperatively with other Extension faculty at the parish, region, and state levels. This employee must be willing to continue professional improvement as a faculty member of the LSU AgCenter and pursue an appropriate area of specialization. Coordination and collaboration with other LSU AgCenter Research and Extension faculty will be essential.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A baccalaureate degree in education, vocational education, agricultural sciences, family and consumer sciences/human ecology, biological or social sciences, recreation and leisure studies or closely related areas. Must have an undergraduate degree with an overall grade-point average of at least 2.5 (all GPA requirements based on a 4.0 system) and a 3.0 for graduate work attempted, if any, or master’s degree or a current grade-point average of at least 3.0 on at least 12 hours of graduate credit. This applicant must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. A Master’s degree in a field listed above is desired. Experience in recruiting, training and supervising volunteers and experience in teaching and applying principles of leadership development to both youth and adults is also desired. Knowledge of public relations and the ability to cope with change are highly desirable characteristics. Ability to work with and through others is essential as is the ability to function with minimum supervision.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided). Satisfactory completion of two specific graduate level extension courses (6 credit hours) is generally required in the first two years of employment. Additionally, a faculty member who does not have a related master’s degree must complete an additional 9 hours of related graduate level coursework in order to be promoted to associate agent and such promotion must occur in the first seven years of employment. An exception is that additional agent experience may be substituted for nine hours of coursework, but not for the two required courses.
