Postdoctoral Researcher

(Ecology and Control of Phragmites Scale)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)

WORK LOCATION: Department of Entomology, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The widespread die-offs of Phragmites in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana has been associated with outbreaks of an exotic scale Nipponaclerda biwakoensis (Hemiptera: Aclerdidae). Because of the importance of Phragmites for the ecology of coastal Louisiana, several state and federal agencies have joined forces to understand the impacts of this scale. Funding is available for a postdoctoral research associate in the area of ecology and biological pest management. The successful candidate will join a team of scientists with expertise on invasive species, biological control, integrated pest management, and wetland ecology. Objectives of this project are to understand the distribution and impact of N. biwakoensis in coastal Louisiana, determine the scale’s host range, and develop an integrated pest management program. The successful candidate will work closely with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, US Army Corps of Engineers- ERDC, and United States Geological Survey. Research will include laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies to address fundamental aspects of the scale-Phragmites system in coastal Louisiana in order to develop an effective management program against the scale. The successful candidate will lead a team of undergraduate, graduate students and a research associate. The postdoctoral associate will be expected to design and implement experiments, and publish results in peer-reviewed entomological and ecological journals.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: PhD in Entomology or related discipline including Ecology or Botany. Experience working with aquatic habitats and insect herbivores is preferred.
