(Ecology and Control of Phragmites Scale)
(This is a grant-funded, two year, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)
WORK LOCATION: Department of Entomology, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Widespread die-offs of Phragmites in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana have been associated with outbreaks of an exotic scale Nipponaclerda biwakoensis (Hemiptera: Aclerdidae). Because of the importance of Phragmites for the ecology of coastal Louisiana, several state and federal agencies have joined forces to understand the impacts of this scale. Funding is available for a research associate in the area of biology, ecology and control of scales. Objectives of this project are to understand the distribution and impact of N. biwakoensis in coastal Louisiana, determine the scale’s host range, and develop an integrated pest management program. Field activities will include coordinating surveys in coastal Parishes, and collecting plant, insect and environmental data every two months. Greenhouse activities will include maintenance of insect and plant colonies, and data collection of experiments. Laboratory experiments will include the evaluation of control products for scales. The successful candidate will help with data collection and analysis, and preparation of quarterly reports for funding agencies. The successful candidate will work closely with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, US Army Corps of Engineers- ERDC, and United States Geological Survey.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Entomology or related discipline including Ecology, Biology or Botany. Experience working with scale insects, aquatic habitats, insect colony maintenance, data collection, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or boating is preferred. We seek a candidate with a high standard in scientific writing and oral communication.
