Looking for some great learning opportunities for your children this summer? Summer workshops which will teach your children skills that will last a lifetime? The LSU AgCenter, Area Nutrition agent, Cathy Judd and volunteers will present “Cooking with Kids”, a beginners cooking class for Summer Workshop, June 20, 21, and 22.
Youth will learn important safety tips in the kitchen, how to avoid kitchen fires, and what to do if you have a kitchen fire from our featured guest, Eric Brazzel, Public Education Officer, with the Ruston Fire Department. Mr. Brazzel will also tell us how to treat a kitchen burn and cuts. Participants will learn how to operate a microwave safely. Students will learn about knife safety and measurements. Students will learn about MyPlate and portion sizes. Label reading and nutrition facts will be taught.
Students will prepare a food item each day. This year students will learn how to make bread in a bag, how to prepare vegetables, and prepare a Louisiana cuisine. They will receive recipes which they can prepared for their family. Please register soon, as we have limited space.
“Cooking with Kids” will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in the Trinity Center Kitchen. Class will begin at 9:00 a.m. till 12:00 p.m. Cost is $30.00 which will cover cost of supplies and food. You may register now by calling the LSU AgCenter office at 251-5134. This three day workshop is geared for students in the 4th to 7th grades.
A three day advance cooking workshop will be held July 17, 18, and 19th. Students that have attended one or more previous “Cooking with Kids” workshops are eligible to attend this class. Students will learn about meal planning, shopping, preparing meals, and clean up. On the last day students will team up with a partner to prepare a recipe on their own. Students will draw a recipe. Ingredients will be provided for the recipe. Students will have an opportunity to put into practice what they learned. The pre-requisite to attend this class is that students must have been in a previous LSU AgCenter “Cooking with Kids” workshop and have cooking a little at home.
The “Advance Cooking Class” will be held at the Courthouse Annex, 307 North Homer Street, first floor, from 9 until 12:00 p.m. Cost for this class is $35.00. Call our office to register 318-251-5134.
Kayla McGuire, 4-H Youth Development Agent and Cathy Judd, will teach “Kids in the Kitchen” workshop in Jonesboro, July 31 to August 2nd. Location will be announced soon.
