St. James 4-Hers Take Top Awards at Area 4-H Commodity Cookery Contest

St. James Parish 4-H was well represented at the 4-H Area Commodity Cookery Contest held on April 28th, at Southland Mall in Houma, La..  The aroma of delicious food filled the mall as 4-H'ers from twelve parishes competed in the annual event.

The "Saluting America" themed event began with a consumer scavenger hunt throughout the mall in which participants were allowed to make consumer comparison observations at various stores.  To keep with the theme, participants were able to enter a patriotic centerpiece, windsock or yard poke.  While the participants completed the scavenger hunt, judges had an extremely difficult task of judging dishes based on taste, appearance, recipe requirements and the Dietary Guidelines.

Winners of the 4-H Area Cookery were:

Seafood Division:
Crab:  Macie Folse, Paulina Elementary - Blue Ribbon
Shrimp:  Nykeisha Ricard, Gramercy Elementary - Blue Ribbon

Beef Division:
Quick and Easy:  Kayla Sherman, Member at Large - 3rd Place

Egg Division:
Appetizer/Salad:  Laynie Arceneaux, St. Peter Chanel - Blue Ribbon
Main Dish:  Nydia Cooper, Member at Large - Blue Ribbon
Dessert:  Joshua Sherman, St. Peter Chanel - Red Ribbon

Sugar Division:
Cookies:  Lamy Guidry, St. Peter Chanel - Blue Ribbon
Cakes:  Zaria Provo, Fifth Ward Elementary - Red Ribbon
Pies:  Hannah Guidry, Member at Large - 2nd Place
