Despite epic cold weather St. James 4-H rules at Southeast District Livestock Show!

Nearly 100 St. James 4-H and FFA Club members exhibited animals at the 79th Annual Southeast District Livestock Show held in Covington. Thirteen parishes compete at the state’s oldest District Livestock Show where 4-H and FFA members vie for champion animals of the show. Even with ice, sleet, snow and a change in schedule St. James youth excelled in the show as exhibitors took home many awesome honors for their outstanding projects.

At the goat show Ashley Waguespack won Overall Reserve Champion Goat and Grand Champion Louisiana Bred Market Goat of the show. Ashley’s other goat placed Reserve Champion LA Bred goat.

During the lamb show, Sadie Lear’s lamb was named Grand Champion Louisiana Bred Lamb and her other lamb was named Reserve Grand Champion LA Breed Lamb and she placed first in showmanship for her age, then named overall Reserve Champion Lamb Showman.

In the market steer classes, St. James’ Ken Gravois had the Reserve Grand Champion Steer. Stephen Hymel had the Grand Champion Louisiana Bred Steer.

In Angus beef breeding classes St. James placed in well with Lexie Martin exhibiting the Overall Reserve Champion Louisiana Bred Angus Heifer.

Meanwhile under the hog barn St. James Parish was very competitive, taking many honors including overall Grand Champion Market Pig. Hunter Hymel a 4-H Club member from Lutcher High School exhibited the Overall Grand Champion and Overall Grand Champion Louisiana Bred Market Hog of the entire show and had the Champion and LA Breed Champion Barrow pig. Hunter’s pig was named Champion Barrow and Champion Louisiana Bred Barrow before being named Grand Champion. Jaryn Darr’s pig was named Reserve Champion Barrow and reserve Louisiana Bred Barrow. Jaryn also exhibited the Reserve Champion Hapmshire and Louisiana Bred Reserve Champion Hampshire pig.

Vincent Laurent showed the Reserve Champion AOB (Spot) Pig of the show.

Rhett Lodrigues exhibited the Champion Yorkshire and Champion Louisiana Bred Yorkshire Pig, while Bailey Richard had the Reserve Champion and Reserve Louisiana Bred Champion Yorkshire Pig.

In the Swine BreedingYorkshire classes, Sadie Dicharry exhibited the Reserve Champion Yorkshire pig. Laynie Martin exhibited the Champion LA Bred AOB and Reserve Champion AOB Pig of the show. Sadie Dicharry exhibited the Reserve Champion Commercial Gilt.

In the swine showmanship classes St. James ruled the show with Bailey Brack being named Overall Swine showman and Champion Senior Swine Showman. Hayden Brack was named Overall Intermediate Swine Showman, and Jaryn Darr was named Champion Junior Swine Showman.
