As part of National 4-H Week, St. James Parish 4-H hosted the 2014 Healthy Lifestyles Fun Run-Walk on October 9, 2014, at Gramercy Recreational Park. Over one hundred 4-H and community members participated in the 1-mile, 2-mile or 5K race.
This year, the theme was "Get Fit or Dye Trying." The runners ran through color powder stations, which represented the many colorful food options that are recommended for good health. The 4-H Junior Leaders, led by State Food and Fitness Board members Laynie Arceneaux, St. James Parish and Gabie Davis, Terrebonne Parish, set up healthy-lifestyle activity stations before the race including "Rock the Bike," a pedal powered blender. Another pre-race activity was "Taste the Rainbow" where participants learned about the benefits of eating fresh fruit.
The Fun Run-Walk was an opportunity for 4-H'ers to show their commitment to healthy living, a National 4-H mandate. Through our partnership with St. James Parish Hospital, volunteers were on hand to serve healthy snacks and drinks to the Fun Run-Walk participants. Carrie Guidry of Carrie's Cardio/Boot Camp led the runners in warm-up activities before the race.
Special thanks to the Fun Run-Walk sponsors: St. James Parish Hospital and Louisiana Federal Credit Union. Individual thanks to Chad and Susan Weidert, Robert Zimmer, Carrie's Cardio, 4-H Junior Leaders, and Representative Clay Schexnayder for donating their time and efforts or items to make this event a success.
Overall winners of the race were:
Overall Female Winner - Vickie Bradford
