On Thursday, March 21 4-H'ers from 11 parishes competed in the Central Region 4-H Commodity Cookery at the Alexandria Mall. Over 100 4-Her’s from Winn, Grant, LaSalle, Beauregard, Vernon, Avoyelles, Allen, Rapides, Pointe Coupee, Evangeline, and St. Landry parishes competed in Beef, Poultry, Sweet Potato, Seafood, and Pecan divisions. Each parish holds preliminary competitions and the winners of the parish event go on to the Regional Commodity Cookery to compete against 4-H'ers from other parishes. The contest not only reinforces food safety principals the 4-H'ers learn through 4-H but it also helps them to become familiar with the different commodities we have in Louisiana and different ways to prepare them. While judges tasted and examined dishes, 4-H'ers had the opportunity to go on “The Amazing Nutrition Race” which is an interactive learning experience that takes place at several different stations set up in the Alexandria Mall. 4-H'ers learned about the importance of hand washing in the “Germ Cave” and also about good nutrition and the importance of physical activity.
