The Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives, Inc. (ALEC) will once again sponsor  two 4-H members and two FFA members to attend the LOUISIANA Electric Cooperative’s Youth Tour trip, June 10-17, 2011, to Washington, D.C.

Please have club members, age 16 years old and older (including 12th graders), complete an application form and submit the following to you so that all applications will be received in the 4-H State Office by February 16, 2011.   There are two parts to the application form: Part 1 (175 points) is an overview of the member’s 4-H activities and Part 2 (125 points) is an essay.

Essay Guidelines: Students are being given the opportunity to voice their opinions (positive or negative) to their elected officials on any issues, problems, situations or successes. In the letter the topic of concern should be stated and thoroughly discussed. The letter should be addressed to the respective local, state or federal official and should be in the format of a formal letter at least one page long. Letters become the property of ALEC and may be published at the discretion of ALEC. We will notify winners by March 1, 2011.

SCORECARD used for selection:

Application form 175 points

Essay 100 points

Quality of work 25 points

TOTAL 300 points

If selected for the Washington, D.C. trip, the student must also attend the Louisiana Electric Cooperative Youth Leadership Conference on March 30-April 1, 2011, which will be held for the twenty-six winners from around the state of the Louisiana Electric Cooperatives Youth Tour Contest. This event will be held at the Baton Rouge Holiday Inn South and expenses will be covered in the Electric Cooperative’s budget. Mrs. Sandy Stockwell will communicate more about this as the event approaches. In summary, the additional Youth Leadership Conference is for orientation and educational purposes prior to the trip to Washington, D.C., on June 10-17, 2011.

The La. Electric Cooperative Youth Tour will provide an opportunity for Louisiana youth to join over 1,400 students from 43 states in a program coordinated by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. They will see their government in action, visit with Congressmen and Senators, and visit various government agencies and sites of historical significance.

This is an outstanding trip valued at over $1,800.00 per student. A promotional video can be found on the Youth Tour’s MySpace Page (http://www.myspace.com/layouthtour). This trip is well planned and chaperoned by four adults from the Louisiana Electric Cooperatives. All expenses are paid by the participating cooperatives in the Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives, Inc. I highly recommend that you encourage participation in this excellent program!
