4-H Shooting Sports

Looking for something a bit different from that everyday routine of TV and computer games? Looking to add just a little more excitement to your day? Well, maybe you can. Take another look at 4-H; don’t only think back to when all you did in 4-H was show livestock and cook. We still do those things but we’ve added so much more. Seems to me we add something different every year. Today I wanted to spend a little time talking to you about one of our newer 4-H programs that several people are very excited about and tell you what you need to do to get involved.

That program would be the Lincoln Parish Shooting Sports Program. We have had the shotgun component of shooting sports for about 5 years. The most important aspect that I see with the shooting sports program is the fact that it puts kids and guns together with an emphasis on safety. Safety with firearms comes with knowledge of how a gun works and what it can do. Our instructors don’t just have these kids out there shooting, but they are teaching them every aspect of gun safety, use, and skills.

Our instructors don’t just teach the participants how to aim and shoot. The shooting sports program strives to enable young people aged 9-19 years, their parents, and adult volunteers to become responsible, self-directed, and productive members of society via involvement in shooting sports and related activities. Whether your child participates in the shotgun or archery component of shooting sports, they will be learning some very important traits that will benefit them throughout life.

A key to the success of the program is recruiting parent volunteers to assist with the program, either as assistant coaches, helping with paperwork, supervision of youth, or even becoming certified instructors. With the interest in this parish in hunting, there should be many adults out there that would make excellent volunteers with our youth. If you feel like the goals of the shooting sports program are important, then maybe you and you children should become involved. The goals of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program are:

  • To enhance development of self-concept, character, and personal growth through safe, educational, and socially acceptable involvement in shooting sports activities.
  • To encourage participation in natural resources and related natural science programs by exposing participants to the content through shooting sports, hunting and related activities.
  • To teach safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment, including sound decision making, self-discipline and concentration.
  • To promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior.
  • To expose participants to the broad array of vocational and life-long vocational activities related to shooting sports and wildlife.
  • To strengthen families through participation in life-long recreational activities.
  • To complement and enhance the impact of existing safety, shooting, and hunter education programs using experiential learning methods to promote progressive development of skills and abilities.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite anyone that would like to see how the shooting sports program is conducted to come by during one of the instructional periods out at the Ruston Gun Club. Come by and see the smile on the young person face that is being put there by the confidence that they gain by safely learning the skills of a great sport. After seeing the opportunity this would offer your young people, I would hope that it’s a program that you would like to get them involved with.
