The 2015 National 4-H Shooting Sports Youth Leadership Institute took place August 4-8, 2015. This youth development program hosted twenty-one youth from thirteen different states at the campus of California State University, Fresno. The National 4-H Shooting Sports Youth Leadership Institute (sometimes referred to as the Ambassador Program) is designed to promote 4-H and 4-H Shooting Sports.

We are extremely pleased that Lincoln Parish 4-H Shooting Sports member and State Shooting Sports Ambassador, Devin Rowland, was selected to attend because of his outstanding work in the Louisiana 4-H Shooting Sports program. Devin is a senior at Ruston High School and has been a member of our 4-H club program since he has been in the 4th grade.

The youth participants, or Ambassadors, received training that will allow them to return to their homes and advocate for the program at the county, regional, and state level. Some public relations support at special events, such as donor/sponsor functions and also serve as spokesperson for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, helping to make 4-H and the 4-H Shooting Sports Program more visible. The Ambassadors further developed their skills in leadership, public speaking, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building.

One of the special activities at this year’s event was the participation in the E.D.G.E. Challenge Course. The course is set up on campus and is a four-hour adventure ropes program which includes low and high elements. Teams started with ground level team building and trust challenges. Through these exercised, the group build a foundation for working together and individuals learned techniques for building leadership and interpersonal skills. Another special activity was a day trip to sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. The park is home to the giant sequoia trees which are the tallest trees in the world. The group also traveled through Kings Canon and took a tour of Boyden Cave.

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Youth Leadership Institute is an annual event hosted by the members of the National 4-H Shooting Sports Committee. The committee is composed of 4-H staff from around the country, working together to promote 4-H and youth development.

I would like to congratulate Devin for his involvement, selection, and participation in this program. We have many outstanding young people in our 4-H Club program and we are very pleased when recognition, as this, is given.
