Contest Winners

Winners were selected in the following contests: 4-H Geaux Green Poster Contest, 4-H Award of Excellence, 4-H Key Award, 4-H Dairy Poster Contest, 4-H Scholarships, State 4-H Ambassador Contest, 4-H Container Gardening Contest, and Senior Honor Cord. List of winners can be found in the attached newsletter.

4-H University 

4-H University will be held in Baton Rouge on the LSU campus Tuesday, June 17 through Friday, June 20. This exciting and ever popular event is open to 4-H members age 13 and older (must have reached 13th birthday by 1/1/14). Teens will get to experience a taste of college life as they stay in college dormitories and explore the beautiful LSU campus. They will join approximately 1,500 teens from across the state for this 4-day event. Participants choose a competitive or non-competitive track for 4-H University.

Participants in the competitive track select a contest area, prepare for competition, and then compete with other 4-H members for trips and other awards. Some contests are team events, while others are for individuals. Contest areas are varied and numerous. They include Computer Simulation, Sports Broadcasting, Fishing Sports, Dog Care, Personal Development, Public Speaking, Next Healthy Food Star, Outdoor Skills Triathlon, and 4-H Has Talent. Interested members will get a complete list of contests and requirements for each.

Participants in the non-competitive track (Clover College) will attend approximately 7 hours of workshops in a selected area of interest. A complete list of available Clover College areas with descriptions will be provided to interested individuals. Contact the 4-H office at (504)736-6519  to register.

4-H Summer Camp 2014 Announced

How would you like to spend a fun-filled week playing soft-ball, basketball, and volleyball? Maybe you would enjoy swimming in an Olympic-sized pool, canoeing, making handicrafts, and learning to shoot a bow and arrow. Maybe you would like to meet and get to know other 4-H members like yourself in a beautiful outdoor setting. If this sounds like fun, plan on spending a week at 4-H Camp this summer! Camp will be held Monday through Friday, June 9-13, 2014. Camp is open to boys and girls in 4th—6th grades. Jefferson Parish campers will join boys and girls from other surrounding parishes at the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center in Pollock, LA for a fun-filled week of adventures and good friends. (Pollock is located near Alexandria, LA in the central part of the state.) Campers will travel by bus to the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center. Transportation is included in camp fees. Volunteer Opportunities

We are in need of 2 male adults to attend 4-H Camp with us Monday, June 10—Friday June 9-13, 2014. No experience needed; required training provided! Must pass required background check. If interested, please call the 4-H office as soon as possible at 504-736-6519.

Jefferson Parish 4-H Shirts are Still Available

Shirts are $10 for regular sizes ( Youth Large, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large, Adult Extra Large) Larger sizes available for $13 (2X, 3X) Contact Ann Gauthier at (504) 736–6519. Checks should be made payable to Jefferson Parish 4-H Clubs and mailed to: Jefferson Parish 4-H Office, 1221 Elmwood Park Blvd., Suite 300, Jefferson, LA 70123. Be sure to indicate size requested and include contact information.

4-H Day at the Capitol

The annual “4-H Day at the Capitol” has been announced by the State 4-H Office. All 4-H members and volunteers are invited to travel to Baton Rouge on Wednesday, May 28th to participate in this fun, educational event! Visit our historic state capitol building! See how our government works! Meet some of your Senators and Representatives who make up our Louisiana Legislature. The day will begin with a short program on the front steps of the Capitol at 10:00 a.m. Members from all over the state of Louisiana will participate. All participating 4-H members will receive a free t-shirt to wear. The event is free, but you must register by Friday, April 25 to get a shirt. Tiger Tailgating! LSU vs. Kentucky Saturday, October 18th
7:00 PM, Tiger Stadium

The LSU Athletic Department will once again offer discounted tickets to a specially designated “4-H Game” to 4-H members, family, and friends. Tickets will be $30.00 each and a free tailgate party will take place before the game. Tickets are limited! Information on purchasing tickets will be provided closer to the event. Make plans to join us!

Continue Your 4-H Experience

We hope that your 4-H experience this year has been a good one! The Jefferson Parish 4-H Youth Development Program is open to youth in grades 4—12. As you grow and change, your 4-H opportunities grow and change with you!If you are changing schools and do not have the opportunity to be in a 4-H Club, please contact the 4-H Office to enroll as a 4-H Mailbox Member. Mailbox Members can participate in all 4-H programs and activities, including summer camp and 4-H University. If you are in 6th grade or above, you might also be interested in the Jefferson Parish Teen Leader Clubs. The East Bank Teen Leader Club and West Bank Teen Leader Club meet once each month in the evenings. Teens from across the parish plan and implement community service, service learning, and leadership activities. We would love to have you join us! Please email your name, mailing address, and phone number to cjwilliams@agcenter.lsu.edu if you are interested in becoming a Mailbox Member of receiving information about the Teen Leader Clubs. Information for the 2014-2015 school year will be sent to you as soon as it becomes available.
