Cookery/Ambassador Winners

Congratulations to the 4-H members who participated in the  Jefferson Parish 4-H Commodity Cookery and Ambassador Contests held February 23 at Lakeside Mall in Metairie. Overall winners will represent Jefferson Parish in the next level of competition. A complete list of winners is listed in the attached copy of the March 2013 newsletter.

LOST Camp—Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology Camp

This special camp will be held Monday August 5– Friday, August 9, 2013 at the Grant Walker Educational Center in Pollock, LA. It is open to boys and girls completing 7th grade or 8th grade as of May 2013. Tracks will cover Wetlands, Energy, Videography, Kitchen Chemistry, Outdoor Skills, ATV, and more! Participants will choose and participate in 3 of these tracks while at camp. Cost of camp is $250 and includes meals, lodging, and transportation. Students on free or reduced lunch can attend camp for $185. You must provide a copy of “Notification Letter for School Meals” to be eligible for reduced fees.  Space is limited! A $50.00 deposit will hold your spot, and will be deducted from the total camp fee.  All fees are DUE in the 4-H Office by 12 noon, Friday, May 10, 2013.

4-H Day at the Capitol

The annual “4-H Day at the Capitol” has been announced by the State 4-H Office. All 4-H members and volunteers are invited to travel to Baton Rouge on Wednesday, May 29 to participate in this fun, educational event! Visit our historic state capitol building! See how our government works! Meet some of your Senators and Representatives who make up our Louisiana Legislature. The day will begin with a short program on the front steps of the Capitol at 10:00 a.m. Members from all over the state of Louisiana will participate. All participating 4-H members will receive a free t-shirt to wear. The event is free, but you must register by Friday, April 26 to get a shirt. 4-H Beef Poster Contest

4-H members are encouraged to create a poster telling about beef and/or beef products. The finished poster should be appropriate for use on a billboard. Poster must be on 11” X 14” white poster board and should generate positive images of beef and beef products and not portray negative images of other food products (such as chicken, pork, etc.) Completed posters are due in the Jefferson Parish 4-H Office by Friday, May 3.  See March 2013 newsletter for complete rules.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are in need of 2 male adults to attend 4-H Camp with us Monday, June 10—Friday June 14, 2013. No experience needed; required training provided! Must pass required background check. If interested, please call the 4-H office as soon as possible at 504-736-6519.

We are in need of adults to work with Jefferson Parish 4-H Teens at the Kids Discovery Tent during the Spring Garden Show in City Park Botanical Gardens Saturday, April 6 . Show hours are 10:00 a.m.-5:00 .pm. If interested and available, please call the 4-H office at 504-736-6519.

4-H University

4-H University will be held in Baton Rouge on the LSU campus Tuesday, June 18—Friday, June 21. This exciting and ever popular event is open to 4-H members age 13 and older (must have reached 13th birthday by 1/1/13). Teens will get to experience a taste of college life as they stay in college dormitories and explore the beautiful LSU campus. They will join approximately 1,500 teens from across the state for this 4-day event. Participants choose a competitive or non-competitive track for 4-H University.

Participants in the competitive track select a contest area, prepare for competition, and then compete with other 4-H members for trips and other awards. Some contests are team events, while others are for individuals. Contest areas are varied and numerous. They include Computer Simulation, Sports Broadcasting, Fishing Sports, Dog Care, Personal Development, Public Speaking, Next Healthy Food Star, Outdoor Skills Triathlon, and 4-H Has Talent. Interested members will get a complete list of contests and requirements for each.

Participants in the non-competitive track (Clover College) will attend approximately 7 hours of workshops in a selected area of interest. A complete list of available Clover College areas with descriptions will be provided to interested individuals. See your 4-H Agent for a 4-H University packet with all of the details and fees. Hurry! Deadline to apply is May 10th!
