4-H Foods Festival

The Charles H. Garrett Community Center was the site for the 4-H Foods Festival held February 17, 2012. Youth entered dishes in different food commodities. The winners of each division in the Jackson Parish 4-H Foods Festival were as follow:

Beef Division: Quick and Easy category, Dare Gueydan

Beef Division: One Dish Meal category, Emily Lay

Egg Division: Appetizer/Salad category, Emily Lay

Poultry Division: Chicken, Jeremy Jewell

Pecan Division: Candy, Hope Simpson

Pecan Division: Other, Jeremy Jewell

Cathy Judd, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent, spoke to the youth about making good food choices and the benefits of exercise. Contestants participated in a cup cake challenge as the judges sampled their dishes; they learned this is an occasional food choice.

These first place winners went on to compete at the Annual Area Commodity Cookery Contest on March 27 at the Bossier Civic Center. We would like to thank the judges for sharing their time and expertise to judge this competition. We especially want to thank Robin Tew and Gloria Gueydan, experienced competitors of the food contest, for sharing tips to help the students do well at the area contest.
