2011 Sugarcane 4-H Livestock Show

The 2011 Sugarcane 4-H Livestock Show and Sale is slated for Thursday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at SugArena in New Iberia, La. Traditionally this is the first fall show for many 4-H exhibitors. The year 2011 will be the twelfth year that all of the livestock events take place at SugArena. This facility allows for housing cattle, sheep, goat and swine overnight as well as washing and grooming space. Camper hook-ups are available on a first come, first served basis. The phone number for the SugArena is 337-365-7539. Wood shavings will also be available for purchase. The SugArena is located off of Hwy 3212 in New Iberia between Hwy 90 and Admiral Doyle Drive. Beef breeding, market lamb, market goat classes, as well as a commercial heifer show, and the rabbit show are open to junior exhibitors from the sugarcane producing parishes. Baby beef/steer, market hog, Iberia market goat and Iberia market lamb exhibition is restricted to Iberia exhibitors only. Below is a link to the schedule of events.

Also below are the general rules and official entry forms for the livestock and rabbit shows. Beef breeding, commercial heifers, market goat and market lambs will be charged a $10.00 fee per animal. Entry fees will be used to pay for awards.

Exhibitors should return their completed livestock entry forms along with registration papers (beef breeding) and entry fees, made payable to Iberia 4-H Foundation, Iberia Parish 4-H Office, Suite B-110, 300 Iberia St., New Iberia, LA 70560 by Friday, September 2, 2011.

Entries received between September 5-9, 2011, will be accepted but entry fees will double to $20 per animal. Entries will not be accepted after September 9, 2011.

Please duplicate forms as needed. Exhibitors can send their paper work and fees in directly to the 4-H office in New Iberia or to their parish 4-H office.

Rabbit forms can be mailed directly back to the Iberia 4-H office by Wednesday, September 14, 2011. There will be a $3.00 per rabbit entry fee this year for rabbits pre-entered, so that premiums can be paid. A $5.00 entry fee will be charged for rabbits entered the day of the show. Please duplicate this form as needed. Each rabbit exhibitor must pre-enter using the entry form below.

The livestock show (beef breeding, commercial heifers, market lamb, and market goat) is open to 4-H and FFA members from the designated sugarcane producing parishes. The rabbit show is open to children between the ages of 9-20 years old. Exhibitors must not have completed their senior year of high school.

** No individual will be permitted to make more than one entry under any class number in any department with the exception of market lambs, market goats and commercial heifers. **

Exhibitors should have possession of their animal thirty days prior to the show. Exhibitors should bring updated health papers to the show. Show officials and/or local veterinarians will be checking health papers. Without proper health papers that have been checked, 4-H’ers will not be allowed to show.

All exhibitors must check-in upon arrival.

Exhibitors with beef cattle that do not have registration papers must complete the substitution registration form available through the link below and return it with their entry form. Exhibitors who turn in a substitution registration form must bring a copy of the registration form to the festival and turn this in at check-in. Exhibitors with young calves that have not received registration papers from their breed association, may bring in a copy of their paper work that was sent off requesting that the calf be registered.

Market Lambs (Class N)

More than one lamb per class can be shown but no more than three can be shown. If more than three lambs are entered, scratches must be made at weigh in.

All market lambs will be weighed and a maximum of six classes will be determined.

Commercial Heifers (Class O)

The entries in this division will be judged as Replacement Heifers and should be fed and fitted accordingly.

Commercial heifers will be classified into two divisions:
1) Brahman Influence
2) Non-Brahman Influence

An exhibitor may show a maximum of two heifers regardless of classification.

The minimum weight of heifers is 300 pounds.

Each exhibitor must be able to show heifers unassisted. Heifers will be shown at halter.

Market Goats (Class P)

More than one goat per class can be shown but no more than four can be shown. If more than four goats are entered, scratches must be made at weigh in.

All Market Goats will be weighed and placed into classes dependent on the number of goats entered.
