Louisiana 4-H University Brings Youth From Across the State to the LSU Campus

4-H’ers from across Iberia Parish were named blue ribbon winners in various contests on June 23, 2011, at the final session of the LSU AgCenter’s "4-H University" in Baton Rouge, La.

About 1,800 people – nearly 1,500 young people and hundreds more adult leaders and volunteers – from across Louisiana participated in the 4-H University events on the LSU campus June 22-24, 2011. Events included competition for trips and prizes, educational activities, as well as the election of state 4 H officers and district representatives.

The gathering is one of the highlights for 4-H members in Louisiana. 4-H is the youth development program of the nation’s land-grant university system and is a dynamic effort designed to help young people and their families improve their quality of life.

4-H’ers competed individually and as members of teams in more than 35 project areas, such as automotive care and driving skills, livestock judging events, nutrition, computer science, engineering, fashion revue, public speaking and home environment.

Iberia Parish had seven state winners in three contests: Mallory O’Brien, Catholic High, Public Speaking CoOp; Derien Pacetti, Westgate and Robert Lancon, Highland Baptist, Solutions Unlimited; Abby Songne and Stewart Lockett, Iberia Middle School and Chanay George and Trent Broussard, New Iberia Senior High, The Next Food Star; and one 1st Alternate, Marcus Smith, Highland Baptist, Child Development.
