A Welcome from Your Agents

The East Baton Rouge Parish 4-H Staff would like to welcome new agent, Ms. Katie Strecker! Ms. Katie is a native of East Baton Rouge Parish and a lifelong EBR 4-H’er. For the past three years she served St. Tammany Parish as a 4-H agent where she headed the Livestock and Shooting Sports clubs and helped planned numerous parish, regional, and statewide events. Ms. Katie has been with the EBR team since last April and has already hit the ground running so be prepared to see her face around your school and parish events! Help us to welcome Ms. Katie Strecker back to East Baton Rouge 4-H!

The 4-H team would also like to welcome all members to another amazing year with East Baton Rouge Parish! Whether you are first year member, in your final year, or in the middle of your 4-H experience, your EBR 4-H Staff is excited to bring many exciting opportunities to you and your family! We have some great activities planned and we are confident that you will find at least one thing that fits your interests. Along with continuing our Shooting Sports program, EBR 4-H will also bring you the new Outdoor Skills Club. Red Stick Sprouts is another new program that will take place seasonally at the Red Stick Farmers’ Market. We’ll also continue to offer programs of the past including cookery contests, livestock activities, workshops, and camps!

Be sure to keep up with all of these opportunities by bringing home your monthly edition of the Clovertalk, and always remember that your agents are here for all questions and concerns. We are all excited to embark on another year with our 4-H’ers and look forward to all of the memories we will make together as you all work to make the best better.

National 4-H Week

Help us celebrate our 4-H spirit during National 4-H Week, October 5-11, 2014! Show your 4-H pride by sponsoring school activities throughout the week! Some examples are sponsoring a free dress day wearing the color green, giving back to your teachers by providing them with something sweet, or cleaning the school grounds. We’re excited about the year so you should be too!

EBR Is Shooting For Excellence!

The EBR 4-H Shooting Sports Club is ready to get started and welcome new members! This year agents and instructors decided to offer a Hunter’s Education class in conjunction with our annual Shooting Sports Field Day. The Hunter’s Education Class will be offered to all youth either residing or attending school in EBR Parish at no charge except for the $5.00 4-H membership fee for nonmembers. The class will begin Friday, October 3rd from 6:00 p.m-9:00 p.m. at Waddill Wildlife Refuge on N. Flannery, and will continue at 8:00 a.m. October 4th. The class will end at approximately 2:00 p.m. on the 4th. To register please call the parish office at (225) 389-3055. All participants must register by October 1st!

Interested in joining Shooting Sports and not quite sure of what it is? We have the perfect event for you! Following the Hunter’s Education class will be the EBR Shooting Sports Field Day from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., also held at Waddill Wildlife Refuge. Youth either residing or attending school in EBR Parish are invited to try each of the four disciplines – air rifle, air pistol, shotgun, and archery – in preparation for the Shooting Sports season. There is no charge for the field day and preregistration is not required. We also encourage youth to leave their firearms at home and leave the equipment up to us!

The Mandatory Training Day will take place October 11th from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. This training is MANDATORY for all new members or previous members taking on a new discipline. First year members may only take part in one discipline. Please contact Ms. Katie or Ms. Abby with any questions at (225) 389-3055.
