Come out and support your fellow East Baton Rouge 4-H’ers as they exhibit their livestock projects! Below is a schedule of event for you to plan accordingly.
Friday, January 23, 2015
· 3:00 PM—Barns open to admit animals
· 6:00 PM—All animals must be in the barns and registered
Saturday, January 24, 2015
· 9:30 AM—Shows begin (Hogs begin in the Coliseum, Poultry begins in the barns)
· 12:00 PM—Cattle Show Starts (or following the Goat Show, whichever is later)
· Parade of Champions and Exhibitor Dinner to conclude the show
East Baton Rouge Parish Cookery will be held in conjunction with the Parish Livestock Show on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the LSU AgCenter Nelson Memorial Building on LSU’s campus. Registration will open at 10:00 a.m. followed by judging starting at 10:30 am sharp. Awards will be presented and given out following the conclusion of judging, estimated time will be 12 noon.
Divisions include: Ground Beef, Egg, Poultry, Seafood, and Sugar. Each eligible category winner will move on to the District Cookery Contest in April. For more information on the possible division, categories, and rules, please refer to page 3.
The next Outdoor Skills Club meeting will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the EBR 4-H Property in Baker, LA. The meeting will begin at 10 AM and the focus will be Campfire Cooking & Safety. Members will learn how to set up and start a campfire, how to cook over the fire, and how to safely and properly care for a campfire.
If you are still interested in joining the Outdoor Skills Club, it’s not too late to sign up. Please feel free to join us and check out what this club is all about. If you are unable to attend, but still want information, please contact one of the 4-H Agents to get you signed up and placed on the contact list for more detailed information.

4-H’ers, please don’t forget about this great opportunity! The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. will once again host its annual Honey Bee Essay Contest open to all 4-H youth. This year’s essay will be:
“Planting for Bees from Backyards and Up.”
1. Contest is only open to active 4-H Members.
2. Essay must be 750-1,000 words in length written on the designated topic with factual statements.
3. A biographical sketch must accompany each essay. Sketch should include the essayist’s date of birth, age, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number.
4. Essays will be judged on (1) research– 40% (2) accuracy– 30% (3) creativity– 10% (4) logical development–10%
5. National winners will be announce by May 1, 2015
ALL ESSAYS ARE DUE TO THE EBR 4-H OFFICE BY JAN. 30, 2015. No late entries will be accepted.
National Winners will be awarded:
1st Place -- $750.00, 2nd Place -- $500.00, 3rd Place -- $250.00
Louisiana 4-H will once again host its “4-H Night with the Pelicans” on Friday, February 27, 2015. Cone out and support Louisiana 4-H as the Pelicans take on the Miami Heat in the Smoothie King Arena. Ticket prices vary and promotional packages are available. The Tri-Parish Trotters will meet again on Thursday, January 15 @ 6:00 PM at the Shady Park Arena in Greenwell Springs, LA.
This meeting will focus on the Western Pleasure, Western Riding, and Hunter Under Saddle events held at the 4-H Summer Shows. Be sure to bring your horse to take part in this interactive session.
Although going off to college is an exciting time in life, it can also be very expensive. 4-H is here to help with your financial needs through parish and state scholarship opportunities. All high school seniors in East Baton Rouge Parish must complete their 4-H Scholarship forms and turn them into the Parish Office by Friday, February 27, 2015. We encourage senior 4-H members to take advantage of the scholarships available. This is your opportunity to showcase your involvement and get awarded for it! Please contact an agent with questions.

The parish cookery contest is a great opportunity for young cooks to explore their culinary skills. Dishes can be an original creation or a family favorite, internet find or Pinterest project, it’s up to you! Dishes must be prepared at home and brought to the contest for judging. Please bring ONLY ONE SERVING of the dish to be entered. For candy, cookies, and the like, please bring 3 or 4 pieces. A completed copy of the recipe (ingredients and instructions) must be presented with the dish. The serving should be presented in a standard size container or plate. Please no table décor (placemats, flower arrangements, etc.). 4-H’ers can enter one or more cookeries/divisions; however, only one dish may be entered in each category. Because of reasons concerning food safety, we suggest that you prepare the dish the night before and bring it on ice. Microwaves will be available to heat servings for judging.
Ground Beef Cookery
Must use at least 1 pound of ground beef.
Must meet requirements for one of the following categories:
Low Calorie Main Dish- has less than 300 calories per serving (Calculate calories on the recipe form. The information to calculate the calories is provided on the back of the recipe format sheet.)
Quick and Easy Main Dish -ready to serve in less than one hour (state time for each step including cooking/baking time.)
One Dish Meal - provide food from at least three of the MyPyramid food groups (indicate groups on recipe.)
May be any type of dish:
Appetizer, main dish, soup, salad or snack
Chicken-must be at least 2 pounds bone-in or 1 pound de-boned. You can use whole chicken or parts such as wings, thighs, legs or breast. May use a fryer, broiler, capon, baking hen, roaster or Cornish hen. Processed chicken is not allowed.
Processed Poultry Products- must use at least 12 ounces of value added (marinated, breaded, seasoned, or reformed) poultry products. Includes ground turkey, turkey bacon or sausage, smoked turkey, turkey ham, turkey rolls, chicken franks, smoked chicken, ground chicken, chicken strips or nuggets, or canned chicken.
Other Poultry Meat- must contain at least 2 pounds bone-in or 1 pound de-boned poultry meat from guinea, goose, grouse, ostrich, or emu.
Categories are as follows:
- Appetizer and Salad
- Main Dish
Must use at least four eggs (whites, yolks, or whole) in the dish. The recipe must prepare only one standard size dish. No raw eggs allowed.
Must be at least 1 cup of the primary seafood (fresh, frozen, pasteurized, or dried; no canned seafood allowed). Seafood Categories Include:

Must contain at least 1 cup of sugar in the submitted dish.
