800 Cans of Caring

EBR Parish 4-H would like to give a huge shout out to the Glasgow Middle 4-H Club for gathering over 800 canned goods for the EBR 4-H Canned Food Drive. This group worked extremely hard as they hosted a school-wide food drive to assist needy families during the holiday season. Their hard work surely paid off!





4-H Night with the Pelicans

Louisiana 4-H will once again host its “4-H Night with the Pelicans” on Friday, February 27, 2015. Come out and support Louisiana 4-H as the Pelicans take on the Miami Heat in the Smoothie King Arena. Ticket prices vary and promotional packages are available.

Great promotional packages are available for the Pelican’s game that include:

  • Access to the private 4-H pre-game party
  • Hoops & Clovers T-Shirt
  • Post-game photo with your 4-H group

Buzz on the Bees

4-H’ers, please don’t forget about this great opportunity! The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. will once again host its annual Honey Bee Essay Contest open to all 4-H youth.

This year’s essay will be: “Planting for Bees from Backyards and Up.”

Contest Rules:

1. Contest is only open to active 4-H Members.

2. Essay must be 750-1,000 words in length written on the designated topic with factual statements.

3. A biographical sketch must accompany each essay. Sketch should include the essayist’s date of birth, age, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number.

4. Essays will be judged on (1) research– 40% (2) accuracy– 30% (3) creativity– 10% (4) logical development–10%

5. National winners will be announced by May 1, 2015

All essays are due to the EBR 4-H office by January 30, 2015. No late entries will be accepted.

National winners will be awarded:

1st Place - $750.00
2nd Place - $500.00
3rd Place - $250.00

Outdoor Skills Club

The next Outdoor Skills Club meeting will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the EBR 4-H property in Baker, LA. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and the focus will be on ATV operation and safety. Members will learn basic ATV operation and safety practices through the principles of BONE-C and Tread Lightly.

If you are still interested in joining the Outdoor Skills Club, it’s not too late to sign up. Please feel free to join us and check out what this club is all about. If you are unable to attend, but still want information, please contact one of the 4-H agents to get you signed up and placed on the contact list for more detailed information.

The EBR 4-H property is located off of Plank Road at 8300 Comite Acres Dr., Baker, LA 70714.

Shooting Sports News

The East Baton Rouge Shooting Sports Program is in full swing! Practices have been going extremely well and we cannot thank our volunteers and instructors enough.

Please be sure to complete your membership form and return to Katie Strecker as soon as possible. These are important for recording practice hours for competition eligibility. If you did not receive a form, please be sure to let us know. Practices will be held this month on Saturday, December 13 from 9-11 a.m. (archery, air rifle, air pistol). Shotgun practice will be held at Hunter’s Run from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Horse Club

The Tri-Parish Trotters will meet again on Thursday, December 18 at 6 p.m. at the 5D Arena in Zachary, LA.

This meeting will focus on the roping and rough stock events held at the 4-H summer shows. Be sure to bring your horse to take part in this interactive session.

Fashion Camp

“I Partied with the State 4-H Fashion Board” is the theme set for the 2015 Fashion Camp. Camp will be held on Saturday and Sunday, January 24-25, 2015 at Camp Grant Walker. This camp is geared toward 10-13 year olds who are interested in learning more about apparel design and fabrication.

Registration is due to the EBR 4-H office by December 12, 2014. Camp registration fees are $65, which include your stay at camp, meals, and supplies during the weekend. If you are interested in attending, please contact Shawn Zeringue or Katie Strecker for more information and all required forms.
