Louisiana 4-H will once again host its “4-H Night with the Pelicans” on Friday, February 23, 2018. Come out and support Louisiana 4-H as the Pelicans take on the Miami Heat in the Smoothie King Arena. Ticket prices vary and promotional packages are available.

Buzzin’ for Success

4-H’ers, please don’t forget about this great opportunity! The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. will once again host its annual Honey Bee Essay Contest open to all 4-H youth. This year’s essay will be:

“What’s so super about the super organism the Honey Bee?” Turn in your essays using the link below:



1. Contest is only open to active 4-H Members.

2. Essay must be 750-1,000 words in length written on the designated topic with factual statements.

3. A biographical sketch must accompany each essay. Sketch should include the essayist’s date of birth, age, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number.

4. Essays must be 12 pt font, double spaced, with normal margins.

ALL ESSAYS ARE DUE BY JAN. 29, 2017. No late entries will be accepted.

State Winners will be awarded:

1st Place -- $100.00, 2nd Place -- $75.00, 3rd Place -- $50.00

Horse Club

Horse Club will meet again on Tuesday, January 16nd @ 6 PM at Central Perk Coffee in Central. Our Horsemanship/Showmanship Clinic is on! It will be Sunday, January 14th, at 2:00pm at the Shady Park Arena.

Junior Leadership Conference

Junior Leadership Conference will be held March 9-11, 2018 at Camp Grant Walker. This year’s theme is Superheroes – Have No Fear JLC is Here! The tracks offered are super healthy living, outdoor, unseen powers of agriculture, ready set action, unmask your super talent, and leadership with great power comes great responsibility.

Register by January 15, 2018. Open to all 4-H Members 14 years and older. Please contact Mrs. Rochelle for more information.

Livestock Club News

The East Baton Rouge Parish Livestock Club will meet on Tuesday, January 9th at 6 PM at the Gas/Utility Building in Zachary, LA. This meeting will focus on the upcoming shows and assist members is making sure they are ready for the show ring. Lots of important information will be discussed, so please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you have any questions, or need more information, please contact Mrs. Rochelle.

3:00 PM—Barns open to admit animals

6:00 PM—All animals must be in the barns and registered

Saturday, January 13, 2018

9:30 AM—Shows begin (Hogs in large animal area, Poultry in the small animal area)

12:00 PM—Cattle Show Starts (or following the Goat Show, whichever is later)

Parade of Champions and Exhibitor Dinner to conclude the show

National 4-H Conference

February 1, 2018 - The 2019 National 4-H Conference Applications will be available. 4-H youth in their sophomore year of high school are eligible to apply.

In February and March, we will host 2-3 webinars about the application process. These will be open to volunteers, parents and youth.

May 7, 2018 – Applications will be due to the state office.

May 15, 2018 – Interview Schedule will be released.

June 19, 2018 – Interviews will be held in the afternoon during 4-H University.

June 19, 2018 – Winners will be announced during 4-H University night assembly.

Recent Service Projects

Some of our in school clubs participated in Holidays for Heroes, through the American Red Cross, and our Livestock Club put on a sock drive. Way to go East Baton Rouge 4-H!

Save the Camp Date

The dates are released! 4-H camp will be at Camp Grant Walker from July 16, 2018 –July 20, 2018. Camp is for 4-H members grades 4th-6th. Be on the look out for more information!

Scholarship Time for Seniors

Although going off to college is an exciting time in life, it can also be very expensive. 4-H is here to help with your financial needs through state scholarship opportunities. All high school seniors in East Baton Rouge Parish must complete their 4-H Scholarship forms by March 9, 2017.

Shooting Sports News

The East Baton Rouge Parish Shooting Sports Program is moving forward with a great group of members. As we get closer to competition matches, please be sure that you acquire the minimum 8 hours of qualifying practice time to compete. Practices will be held on Saturday January 6 & 20 from 9-11 AM (archery, air rifle, air pistol, and shotgun). All practices will be held at the EBR 4-H Property in Baker, LA.

The District Shooting Sports Invitational at East Baton Rouge will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018. THIS IS ONLY OPEN TO ENROLLED 4-H Shooting Sports Members 9-19. Divisions include: Jr. Shotgun (25 5-Stand), Sr. Shotgun (25 5-Stand), Jr. Air Rifle (3P), Sr. Air Rifle (3P), Jr. Air Pistol, Sr. Air Pistol, Jr. BB, Jr. Archery (Barebow, Cmpd, Genesis, Sighted Recurve), and Sr. Archery (Barebow, Cmpd, Genesis, Sighted Recurve).
