National 4-H Week
Oct. 7-13 has been set as National 4-H Week! This event is designed to promote and celebrate 4-H throughout the country. It reminds us to pledge our heads to clearer thinking, our hearts to greater loyalty, our hands to larger service and our health to better living for our club, our community, our country and our world. Help us celebrate 104 years of Louisiana 4-H!

Louisiana Art and Folk Festival
The 57th Annual Louisiana Art and Folk Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 in downtown Columbia, La. Make plans to visit the 4-H mini-farm and Children's Tent located on the riverwalk. Come pet the farm animals and participate in the children's art activities. Members of the Junior Leader Club will be assisting with activities in the children's area.

Fashion, Food and Fitness Club
Food, fun and flavor! Good nutrition doesn't have to be dull. This afterschool project club is open to Caldwell 4-H members in grades 4-6 and will have monthly meetings throughout the school year. Members of the club will meet once a month to focus on fashion, food and fitness. Learn to experiment with different foods that are both good and good for you. Increase your knowledge of good health through MyPlate. Learn to choose and eat nutritious foods and use proper preparation techniques. Stay in shape with fun activities and games. Learn about fashion and modeling. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 15 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Caldwell Parish Public Library.

Area Leader Forum
The Area 4-H Leader Forum for the 12 parishes in the Northeast Region was held on Sept. 19 at the Rayville Civic Center. Representing Caldwell Parish were Danyell Guerrero, Charlotte Michaud and Donna Rollins. The theme for this year's program was "Inspire a Generation: Team 4-H." Participants attended professional development sessions for new leaders as well as master volunteers.

Caldwell Parish Beef and Goat Show
The Caldwell Parish 4-H Beef and Goat Show was held on Sept. 15 at the Lions Club Rodeo Arena. 4-H members from across the northeast region were invited to attend this all day event. Caldwell Parish exhibitors included Krista Weems, Jackson McCann and Abbie McCann. Logan Tarver, Lander McCann and Bridger McCann participated in the Pee-Wee Show. Sponsors for this event included the Caldwell Parish Police Jury, Caldwell Bank, Homeland Bank, Citizens Progressive Bank, Senator Neil Riser, Clint Warner Livestock and McGuffee Cattle Company. Thanks to these sponsors for making the show a success.

Leaf ID Contest
Entries for the 4-H Leaf ID Contest are due to the 4-H office on Friday, Oct. 26. Submit a notebook of 15 pages of leaves, one leaf per page. Leaves must be collected during the current school year. Tape each leaf on a separate piece of construction or copy paper. Be specific when identifying leaves. Write your name, school and grade on the front cover of the notebook. Contest divisions are grades 4-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Cash awards will be given for first, second and third place in all divisions.

Fall Foods Festival
The Fall Foods Festival will be held on Monday, Nov. 12 at 8:45 a.m. at Union Central Elementary. The pre-registration deadline for this event is Wednesday, Nov. 7. Call the 4-H office at 318-649-2663 to pre-register. Dish categories are Rice Main Dish, Rice Any Other, Pecan, Sweet Potato, Egg, Chicken, Ground Beef and Any Other Beef. Each 4-H'er may enter one dish per category. All dishes must be chilled and transported in an insulated ice chest with ice. The Consumer Foods Judging contest is open to 4-H'ers who do not want to enter a dish, but still want to compete during the festival. Contestants will make food choices from restaurants, grocery stores and/or vending machines. The contest will consist of 3 classes of food items with 4 items in each class. Classes will be ranked first, second or third choice with choices being based on health, money, lifestyle or other requirements based on the given situation. Contest categories are grades 4-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Cash awards will be given to first, second and third place winners. The Best of Show winner will receive an award.
