National 4-H Week
Oct. 2-8, 2011, has been set as National 4-H Week! This event is designed to promote and celebrate 4-H throughout the country. It reminds us to pledge our heads to clearer thinking, our hearts to greater loyalty, our hands to larger service and our health to better living for our club, our community, our country and our world. Help us celebrate 103 years of Louisiana 4-H! 

Louisiana Art and Folk Festival
The 56th annual Louisiana Art and Folk Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, in downtown Columbia. Make plans to visit the 4-H mini-farm and Children's Tent located on the riverwalk. Come pet the farm animals and participate in the children's art activities. Members of the Junior Leader Club will be assisting with activities in the children's area.

Area Leader Forum
The Area 4-H Leader Forum for the 11 parishes in the Northeast Region was held on Sept. 21, 2011, at the Rayville Civic Center. Representing Caldwell parish were Danyell Guerrero, Union Central Elementary School and Portia Cassels, Caldwell Parish Junior High School. The theme for this year's program was "Cultivating the Future: 4-H Has It Growin' On!" Participants attended professional development sessions for new leaders and master volunteers.

Caldwell Parish Beef and Goat Show
The Caldwell Parish 4-H Beef and Goat Show was held on Sept. 17, 2011, at the Lions Club Rodeo Arena in Columbia. 4-H members from Franklin, Ouachita, Richland, Union and Winn parishes participated in this all day event. Caldwell parish exhibitors included Bailey Coates, Krista Weems, Lindsay Coates, Destiny Nappier, Abbie McCann and Jackson McCann. Logan Tarver participated in the Pee Wee Show. Sponsors for this event included Caldwell Parish Police Jury, Caldwell Bank, Homeland Bank, Citizens Progressive Bank, Senator Neil Riser, Clint Warner Livestock, McGuffee Cattle Company and Jerry Bailey representing Kooler Ice. We are very grateful to these sponsors for making the show a success.

Leaf ID Contest
Entries for the 4-H Leaf ID Contest are due to the 4-H office on Friday, Oct. 28. Submit a notebook of 15 pages of leaves, one leaf per page. Leaves must be collected during the current school year. Tape each leaf on a separate piece of construction paper or copy paper. Be specific when identifying leaves. Write your name, school and grade on the front cover of the notebook. Contest divisions are Grades 4-6 and Grades 7-12. Cash awards will be given for first, second and third place in both divisions. For complete contest details, visit the Leaf ID Contest page. 

Catch-phrase for Camp Contest
Announcing the 10th annual "Catch-phrase for Camp" contest! Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center needs your ideas! What's a good theme for 4-H Summer Camp? Send in your most creative ideas for a slogan that is 7 words or less. To enable the campers once again to have more choice in the design of their t-shirts, illustrations must accompany the phrase and will be part of the contest. The contest is open to all 4-H club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and "catchy," capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp t-shirt. The winner will receive a monetary award from the Louisiana Association of Extension 4-H Agents (LAE 4-HA). Think fast! The deadline is Nov. 1, 2011Entries must be RECEIVED in the Grant Walker Office by this date in order to be considered.

Submissions must also include the following:
   Full name and age of person submitting the slogan
   Parish and 4-H Club
   Complete mailing address
   Telephone number

Contest entries will be judged by the LAE 4-HA Ways and Means Committee and the 4-H Camp Staff. After final selection, the winner will be notified and asked to sign a release for the slogan to be used in all publicity for the camp as well as on the t-shirt. Both the 4-H'er and parent or guardian must sign the release. 

Deadline for receipt of entries is Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011. Individuals may submit multiple entries which may be sent together to the following address:

Fall Foods Festival
The 4-H Fall Foods Festival will be held on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, 8:45 a.m. at Union Central Elementary School. The pre-registration deadline for this event is Wednesday, Nov. 9. Dish categories are beef, catfish, chicken, corn, egg, pecan, rice and sweet potato. Each 4-H'er may enter 1 dish per category. All dishes must be chilled and transported in an insulated ice chest with ice. The Consumer Foods Judging contest has been added to the Foods Festival. 4-H'ers who do not want to enter a dish can still compete during the Festival by entering this contest. Contestants will make food choices from restaurants, grocery stores and/or vending machines. The contest will consist of 3 classes of food items with 4 items in each class. Classes will be ranked first, second or third choice with choices being based on health, money, lifestyle or other requirements based on the given situation. Contest categories are Grades 4-6 and Grade 7-12. Cash awards will be given to first, second and third place winners. Best of Show winner will be awarded a $50 savings bond.
