Clubs of the Year for 2014 - 2015
Congratulations OBCA 4-6 Grade Club and Union Central Elementary 4th Grade Club for winning Clubs of the Year for 2014-2015! OBCA 4-6 won Club of the Year for Member Participation and Union Central 4 won Club of the Year for Monthly Program. Both clubs were recognized and received trophies during 4-H Awards Night held on Monday, April 27.

Area Commodity Cookery Contest
Six Caldwell Parish 4-H members participated in the Northeast Area 4-H Commodity Cookery Contest on March 24 at the Rayville Civic Center. These 4-H'ers became eligible to attend the Area Cookery by placing first in their division during the Fall Foods Festival held in November. While their dishes were being judged, 4-H'ers also participated in Healthy Living games and activities led by members of the Northeast Region Leader Board. Caldwell 4-H Junior Leader Nealy McCoy helped lead the physical activity session and Leslee Bennett, Caldwell 4-H Junior Leader and Northeast Region Leader Board member helped lead the Knife Skillls session. Abigale Michaud placed 1st in Rice Main Dish and competed for the Best of Show Award. Leslee Bennett placed 2nd in the Heart Healthy Ground Beef and blue ribboned in Rice Any Other. Nealy McCoy placed 3rd in Egg and blue ribboned in Pecan. Blue ribbon winners were Colden Russell in Quick-n-Easy Ground Beef, Baylor Russell in Chicken and Amber Burns in Sweet Potato. Congratulations on a great job!

Fishing Clinic
The 4-H Fishing Clinic was held on Saturday, April 18 at Frazier Pond in Grayson. Thirty-three 4-H'ers participating in this event learned about outdoor safety and competed in the Biggest Fish and Most Fish Caught contests. Fishing supplies were provided by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. This event was sponsored by Sheriff Steve May and the Frazier family. Most Fish Caught contest winners were 1st place Kylee Hillestad, 2nd place Ian Smith, 3rd place Kayleigh Arthurs, 3rd place Kade Hillestad, 4th place Justin Frazier. Biggest Fish contest winners were 1st place Daisy Duke, 2nd place Kayleigh Arthurs, 3rd place Kelly Phillips, 4th place Kylee Hillestad and 5th place Zack Crain.

Shooting Sports
Seven Caldwell 4-H Shooting Sports members participated in the Northern Regional Shooting Sports competition held April 9-11 in Grand Cane, La. Tyler Roberts and Logan Tarver competed in rifle. Tyler placed 3rd at the regional competition and qualified for state competition where he placed 1st. Leslee Bennett and Rowdy Michaud competed in Archery. Rowdy James qualified for state where he placed 8th. Shotgun competitors were Logan Tarver, Tracer Houston, Jacob Black and Eli Black.

Pet Show
Caldwell Parish 4-H held its annual Pet Show on Monday, March 30 at the Caldwell Parish High School tennis courts. Twenty-one 4-H'ers from schools across the parish came to the contest with pets that ranged from hermit crabs to horses. Contestants were able to enter three categories of competition: dogs, small animals and large animals. All contestants received ribbons with 4-H'ers who placed first in their division receiving cash prizes. Mixon and Carroll Law Office sponsored this year's pet show. 4-H'ers also participated in a service project by bringing pet supplies that were donated to Saving Paws of Caldwell.

Junior Leadership Conference
Caldwell Parish 4-H Junior Leaders Tracer Houston, Erin Finley, Leslee Bennett and Tyler Roberts attended the Junior Leader Conference on March 13-15. JLC provides the opportunity for diverse groups of youth who are currently engaged in significant leadership and/or service learning activities to come together while further learning and developing their leadership and teamwork skills. JLC features a variety of workshops focused on leadership development, communication, teamwork, service learning and much more. Youth decide what's offered, preside over the sessions and teach all the educational workshops.

State Ambassador Talks
The State Commodity Ambassador Talk Competition was held April 28 on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Nine Caldwell 4-H'ers attended this event competing in the egg, chicken, seafood, sugar and turkey contests. The 4-H Commodity Ambassador Program provides an opportunity for 4-H'ers to increase their knowledge of agricultural commodities and improve their written and verbal communication skills.

4-H Day at the Capitol
4-H Day at the Capitol will be held on Wednesday, June 3. Each year more than 1500 4-H members from all 64 parishes participate in this event. 4-H Day at the Capitol begins with an assembly on the Capitol steps with legislators participating along with state 4-H officers and LSU Vice President for Agriculture Bill Richardson. After visiting with legislators, members will tour the state capitol and have lunch in Baton Rouge. Members will leave the 4-H office in Columbia at 6:00 a.m. to travel to Baton Rouge to attend this event and return later that evening. The cost of the trip is $10 and is due to the 4-H office by May 27. This fee is non-refundable. If you would like to attend this event, come by the 4-H office in Columbia to sign-up.

4-H Camp - "Unbearably Fun!"
Caldwell 4-H'ers will camp this year from June 15-19. Camp fee is $175 and includes meals, lodging, a t-shirt, a picture and transportation. All camp paperwork (health form, permission form, code of conduct) and remaining camp fees, including spending money for the camp store, are due to the 4-H office in Columbia by Monday, June 1.

4-H University / Clover College
4-H U and Clover College will be held from June 23-26 at LSU in Baton Rouge. 4-H University is the premier 4-H event of the year for 4-H members ages 13 and up. 4-H U and Clover College offer both competitive and non-competitive activities along a range of interests from technology to theatre arts. The registration fee for 4-H U / Clover College is $40 and is due to the 4-H office by Monday, June1. If you are interested in attending, come by the 4-H office in Columbia to sign-up. LOST  Camp
The Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology Camp will be held August 3-7 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, La. To be eligible to attend, 4-H'ers must be in the 7th or 8th grade as of May 2015. Camp fee is $175 and is due along with camp paperwork to the 4-H office by Monday, June1. While at LOST Camp, campers will be able to participate in activity tracks in outdoor education, science, engineering  and technology. Tracks from previous years have included forensic science, ATV, explosive chemistry, astronomy, biology, robotics, videlgraphy, super human senses, physics, engineering, Mythbusters and kitchen chemistry. LOST Camp is held at Camp Grant Walker, an 80-acre campsite located near Pollock about 15 miles north of Alexandria. If you are interested in going to LOST Camp, come by the 4-H office to sign up.
