Caldwell 4-H Club members participated in the Area 4-H Cookery Contest on Feb. 28, 2011, at the Rayville Civic Center. Winners included Shelby Strange, Blue Ribbon-Beef; Bailey Coates, Blue Ribbon-Rice; Hailey Ewing, 3rd place-Chicken; Krista Weems, 3rd place-Egg; Nealy McCoy, 1st place-Corn and Blue Ribbon-Sweet Potato and Kassidi Harris, Blue Ribbon-Pecan. First through third place winners received cash awards. Contest participants were involved in fitness activities while attending this event. Each of these 4-H'ers was a first place winner in the Caldwell 4-H cookery contest held in November 2010.
4-H Club members participated in the 4-H Beef Poster Contest to learn more about beef and beef products and their importance to human health. Youth were asked to make a poster telling a story about beef and beef products. All 68 participants received ribbons. First, second and third place winners received cash awards. This contest was sponsored by Caldwell Cattleman's and the Caldwell 4-H Foundation. First place posters will compete in the state contest for additional cash awards.

4-H members demonstrated their knowledge of animals and animal care during the Caldwell 4-H Pet Show held on Mar. 21, 2011. Forty-three animals were entered in the Pet Show. Contest categories were Dogs, Small Animals and Large Animals. All participants received ribbons. First, second, third, fourth and fifth place winners received cash awards. This contest was sponsored by Mixon and Carroll PLC and the Caldwell 4-H Foundation.

4-H Camp sign-up has begun. Caldwell 4-H'ers will camp this year from June 6-10. 4-H Camp is a learning experience that helps members appreciate the outdoors, live together as a group, get along with others and appreciate people with different interests and backgrounds. 4-H Camp is held at the LSU AgCenter's Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center, an 80-acre campsite located near Pollock, Louisiana. To be eligible, members must be in fourth, fifth or sixth grade and must be 12 years of age or younger on Jan. 1, 2011. Camp fee is $175, check or money order only. A $50 deposit is due by April 27, 2011. To sign-up for camp, pay fees and fill out camp forms, come by the Caldwell Parish LSU AgCenter office located at 106 Jackson Street in Columbia, Louisiana. A limited number of spaces are available, so come by our office and reserve your spot for camp as soon as possible.
The Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology Camp (L.O.S.T) is for 7th and 8th grade 4-H members and features tracks in the fields of science, engineering, technology and outdoor education. L.O.S.T. Camp will be held from Aug. 1-5, 2011 at 4-H Camp Grant Walker and costs $175. A $50 deposit is due to the Caldwell 4-H office by May 27. Remaining camp fees and forms are due to our office by July 22. Participants must be in the 7th or 8th grade as of May 2011. Tracks for this year will cover Robotics/GPS, Astronomy/Astrology, ATV, Engineering/Mythbusters, Physics/Biology, Kitchen Chemistry, Recycling, Energy, Outdoor Skills, Videography and Forensic Science/Super Human Senses. Participants will choose 3 tracks and participate in all 3. For more information, contact the Caldwell 4-H office at 318-649-2663.
4-H Day at the Capitol will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the state capitol. The transportation fee of $10 should be paid prior to leaving on June 1. Members will leave from the 4-H office at 6 a.m. and return to the 4-H office at 5 p.m. We will travel to Baton Rouge to attend a 4-H assembly on the capitol steps, visit with legislators and tour our state capitol. After leaving the capitol we will eat lunch and return to Columbia. You will need to bring money to pay for your lunch.
2010-2011 Caldwell 4-H t-shirts are available for purchase for $13 each. Sizes available are youth medium (10-12), youth large (14-16), adult small, adult medium and adult large. Contact your 4-H leader or the Caldwell 4-H office located at 106 Jackson Street in Columbia, Louisiana, to purchase a shirt. Proceeds from t-shirt sales benefit the Caldwell 4-H Foundation.
