The Avoyelles Parish Commodity Cookery Contest was held during the 2010 Thanksgiving holidays. Youth were challenged to find a recipe for a dish featuring one of these commodities: yams, poultry, crawfish, catfish, shrimp, eggs and pecans. The youth were also encouraged to make the majority of the dish themselves under the guidance of their parents or grandparents. The grand champion winners will compete at the district show in Alexandria, La. in March 2011.

Youth also had the opportunity to participate in the Illustrated Talk Contest. The presentations required youth to research information on a chosen commodity and present the information using minimal props of posters and constumes. Grand champion winners will be encouraged to participate in the state competition in April 2011.
