School of Animal Sciences Strategic Plan

MISSION

The mission of the Louisiana State University School of Animal Sciences is the generation, preservation, dissemination and application of basic and applied knowledge in animal science for the benefit of the university, the citizens of Louisiana, the nation, and the global community.

VISION

As part of the flagship institution of the state, the vision of the Louisiana State University School of Animal Sciences is to be a premier animal sciences program, challenging faculty, staff, and students to achieve the highest levels of intellectual and personal development.

VALUES:

In implementing its mission, the Louisiana State University School of Animal Sciences is committed to:

  • recruiting and retaining highly motivated faculty dedicated to providing a high quality educational experience for undergraduate and graduate students and developing nationally/internationally recognized research programs and innovative extension/outreach programs in animal science
  • offering challenging undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare graduates for continued professional development in agriculture along with personnel achievement
  • providing opportunities in research and extension/outreach programs in animal science consistent with our workforce and physical resources that foster professional growth and development of the faculty

GOALS:

Discovery: Enhance the quality and quantity of basic and applied research and scholarly activities in animal science

Performance Indicators:

  • Number of faculty publications per research SY in peer-review outlets
  • Number of faculty presentations per research SY at professional meetings
  • Number of graduate students authoring publications in peer-review outlets and other station/extension publications
  • Number and amount of grants per research SY

Strategies:

  • Place major emphasis on strengthening/developing research emphasis in reproduction/reproductive biotechnology and meats/muscle biology
  • Replace or hire research faculty in each of the research emphasis areas stated above to provide a nucleus of at least 3 faculty members in each area
  • Hire one to two instructors to teach lower division lecture and laboratory courses and upper division where appropriate, thereby allowing tenure-track faculty more time to devote to research activities and graduate education
  • Additional areas will be emphasized once the above objectives are achieved
  • Continue to seek increased support for faculty to conduct research, attend professional meetings, and enhance professional development
  • Encourage graduate students to become more active in authoring or co-authoring research and station/extension publications

Learning: Maintain or increase undergraduate and graduate enrollment and enhance the breadth and depth of the learning experience

Performance Indicators:

  • Number of undergraduate students enrolled and graduating each year in animal science
  • Number of graduate students (MS and PhD) enrolled and graduating each year in animal science
  • Number of undergraduate students participating in undergraduate research projects
  • Number of students participating in internships, exchange programs, and other learning experiences
  • Number of graduate students, particularly PhD students, obtaining grant funding

Strategies:

  • Create an informational, user-friendly website that enhances student recruitment and serves as an information source for current students
  • Hire one to two instructors to teach lower division courses and upper division where appropriate, thereby allowing tenure-track faculty more time to devote to upper division and graduate level courses and mentoring students
  • Provide opportunities for student development of leadership and team skills through participation in departmental clubs and activities
  • Encourage undergraduate students to participate in undergraduate research programs
  • Encourage graduate students to apply for pre-doctoral fellowships (USDA, NSF)
  • Continue to seek support for graduate students to conduct research and attend professional meetings
  • Encourage students to participate in internships, exchange programs, and other learning experiences

Diversity: Recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff, and student body

Performance Indicators:

  • Number of minority and international faculty and staff
  • Number of minority and international undergraduate and graduate students

Strategies:

  • Recruit faculty, staff, and students with diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Recruit minority and international students through on-campus recruiting events and participation in animal science-related events such as field days and educational programs
  • Recruit international graduate students through other universities, the LSU Office of International Programs, and governmental agencies
  • Encourage faculty participation in international programs through the LSU Office of International Programs
  • Provide mentoring and professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students

Engagement: Enhance extension/outreach programs to provide clientele with current research information and education relative to the animal sciences in general and participation of faculty in various professional activities

Performance Indicators:

  • Participation in training and educational programs presented to county agents and producer and clientele groups related to the animal industry
  • Number of publications in outlets targeted to clientele groups
  • Number of faculty serving as advisors for various commodity and clientele groups
  • Number of faculty serving on editorial boards of journals and in elected or appointed positions in professional organizations

Strategies:

  • Encourage and provide support for faculty participating in clientele meetings and organizations
  • Encourage and provide support for faculty and graduate student participation in professional meetings and organizations
  • Increase training and presentations to outside clients on topics in animal science
