The Louisiana Forest Products Development Center, a unit of the LSU AgCenter, will present a workshop on practical wood identification on July 9 on the campus of Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La.
The workshop is designed to familiarize participants of the proper procedure to correctly identify an unknown wood species, according to Dr. Todd Shupe, a forest products researcher in the LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Forest Products Development Center.
“Each wood species contains anatomical features that are unique only to that species, species group, or genus,” Shupe said. “By learning to identify key anatomical features, participants should be able to identify many common domestic wood species.”
Shupe said the workshop is intended for woodworking hobbyists, craftsmen and industry personnel who are interested in learning to properly identify wood. Individuals with little or no previous experience at wood identification are encouraged to attend.
The workshop is being offered in cooperating with the School of Forestry at Louisiana Tech University.
