Bonne Terre Garden Fair set for May 3 in Houma

The 2008 Bonne Terre Garden Fair will be held Saturday, May 3, at Southdown Plantation in Houma.

Gates will open at 8:30 a.m., and the show will last until 4 p.m., said Dr. Bobby Fletcher, the LSU AgCenter’s area horticulture agent said

“This is our third annual Bonne Terre Garden Fair to be held at the Southdown Plantation,” Fletcher said. “This year’s event will feature vendors selling plants, supplies, and lawn and garden merchandise.”

The show will include a plant disease clinic and a soil test station provided by the LSU AgCenter along with a garden-themed art show, kid’s hands-on activities, museum tours, food and more.

Fletcher said the event will take place at the historic Southdown Plantation at 1208 Museum Drive in Houma.

The fair will feature an educational program that will include:

--9:30 a.m., Linda Franzo (The Passionate Platter), “Herbal Pizzazz, From Garden to Table”

--11 a.m., Peggy Martin (The New Orleans Old Garden Rose Society), “Organic Rose Gardening”

--12:30 p.m., Carl Motsenbocker (LSU AgCenter), “Basics of Organic Cultural Practices”

--2:30 p.m., Dan Gill (LSU AgCenter), “A Few of my Favorite Things”

Demo Tent 1 (Located in the front of the plantation)

--10 a.m., Chuck Helmer (Master Gardener), “Watering Made Simple but Efficient”

--11 a.m., Gregg Henderson (LSU AgCenter), “Virtues of Vetiver Grass”

-- 12 p.m., Ron Strahan (LSU AgCenter), “Top Ten Weeds of Southern Lawns”

--1 p.m., Bobby Fletcher (LSU AgCenter), “Calibrating Lawn Spreaders for Proper Fertilization”

Demo Tent 2 (Located on the west side of the plantation)

--10:30 a.m., Gloria Hebert, “Gourdous Gardening”

--11:30 a.m., Mike Hebert (LSU AgCenter), “Tropicals in the Landscape”

--12:30 p.m., Yvette Cutrer (Master Gardener), “Living Wreaths”

1:30 p.m., David Bourgeois (LSU AgCenter), “Ornamental Fish Ponds & Water Gardens”

Fletcher said the speakers, times and titles are subject to change. Gate admission is $3 for adults, and children under 12 enter free. Advanced tickets are $2.
