Ricky Kilpatrick, LSU AgCenter forestry agent in the Northwest Region, has won a Gold Star Award from Project Learning Tree in recognition of his involvement and support of this national organization.

“Ricky Kilpatrick has been a part of PLT ever since the program was introduced to Louisiana in 1985,” said Kathy McGlauflin, director of Project Learning Tree and senior vice president of education with the American Forest Foundation.

“His dedication to the PLT program and his willingness to lend his professional expertise in numerous ways have helped make PLT a success,” McGlauflin said.

Kilpatrick works with schools in the northwestern part of Louisiana to make PLT a part of their curriculum. He supports the development of outdoor classrooms and learning stations using PLT as a focus. He has conducted nearly 100 PLT professional development workshops for educators and participates in PLT facilitator training every year.

He is chair of Louisiana PLT’s state steering committee and contributes to the state PLT newsletter. Each year he attends PLT’s coordinator conference and helped host it in Louisiana in 1993.

Kilpatrick received his bachelor’s degree in forest management from LSU in 1983 and his master’s degree in forest resources from the University of Georgia in 1985. That year, he began his career with the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service. As area forester for Northwest Louisiana, he plans and conducts educational tours, workshops, seminars, demonstrations and farm visits to assist forest landowners with timber and wildlife management.
