WEST MONROE – About 500 young horse enthusiasts participated in the LSU AgCenter’s 2006 State 4-H and FFA Horse Show at the Ike Hamilton Exposition Center here July 10-15.

Of those, youngsters from across Louisiana won honors in a variety of competitions ranging from roping and riding to public speaking and demonstrations.

"The youth who take part in our state horse show represent Louisiana’s best 4-H and FFA members," said Dr. Paul Coreil, vice chancellor of the LSU AgCenter. "These young leaders are excellent examples of what dedication and hard work can achieve."

Horse-related educational activities are just one part of the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H youth development programs, which cover a variety of topics ranging from computers to character education, nutrition, photography, public speaking and much more.

"These young people make us all proud and deserve our strong support," Coreil said in congratulating all who participated. "Let’s also not forget to show our appreciation for the dedicated parents, grand parents, teachers, volunteers and LSU AgCenter faculty members who provide help and guidance all along the way. Without their strong support, our youth educational programs could not be successful."

Officials say competition at the state horse show was strong in a variety of contests, and top Louisiana 4-H winners in many categories will join other 4-H’ers from across the South for the Southern Regional 4-H Championship Horse Show and Contest in Raleigh, N.C., July 26-30.
