The LSU AgCenter’s Idlewild Research Station near Clinton will host its annual Wildlife Field Day Sept. 16.
Dr. Don Reed, LSU AgCenter associate professor at the station, said the Quality Deer Management Association will help coordinate the event, which also is sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
The field day will begin with registration from 8 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. and will conclude with lunch at noon.
"The South Louisiana chapter of QDMA has been helping us put on this field day for the past four years," Reed said, explaining the organization has chapters in most U.S. states and aims to promote quality deer management through a balanced harvest of both bucks and does.
Topics to be included on the program for the field day and the presenters who are scheduled include:
–An Overview of the State’s New Deer Tagging Program by Scott Durham, deer program leader with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
–Establishment and Utilization of Warm-season Food Plots by Dr. Dearl Sanders, professor and research coordinator at the LSU AgCenter’s Idlewild Research Station.
–Development of and Hunting Techniques for "Honey Holes" by Dave Edwards, wildlife biologist, Westervelt Wildlife Services.
–Mineral Supplementation in Managing White-tailed Deer by Dr. Don Reed, associate professor, LSU AgCenter’s Idlewild Research Station.
–Timber Stand Improvement Method for Wildlife by Brian Chandler, area forester, LSU AgCenter.
The registration fee for the field day is $35 if paid by Sept. 8 or $45 if paid after that time or at the field day. The fee covers participation in the field day and a one-year membership or membership extension in the Quality Deer Management Association.
