The LSU AgCenter is sponsoring a portable sawmilling workshop and demonstrations on May 13 at its Idlewild Research Station near Clinton.
Presented in cooperation with Louisiana Tech University, the workshop will include educational programs on buying your first portable sawmill, how to saw logs on a portable sawmill, comparing log scale and lumber tally and drying small quantities of lumber.
LSU AgCenter forester Brian Chandler said the workshop will be of interest to anyone who has downed timber because of last summer’s hurricanes.
"The workshop is designed to provide information to potential portable mill buyers and to those already using one," Chandler said.
Registration for the workshops begins at 8:30 a.m., and the program will start at 9 a.m. Scheduled morning session speakers include Nathan Collins of Woodmizer, Dr. Mark Gibson and George Groditz of Louisiana Tech and Dr. Neils DeHoop and Dr. Todd Shupe from the LSU AgCenter.
After lunch, participants will view demonstrations by various portable sawmill manufacturers.
The registration fee is $15 if received by May 2 and $25 after that. Lunch, refreshments and a variety of printed material from the workshop are included in the fee.
For more information or a registration form with a map to the research station, contact Chandler at (225) 683-3101 or email@example.com.
