News Release Distributed 07/18/05 (Revised 07/20/05)

WEST MONROE – About 600 young horse enthusiasts participated in the LSU AgCenter’s 2005 State 4-H and FFA Horse Show, held for the first time at the Ike Hamilton Exposition Center here July 11-16.

"Having animals and raising them to show takes responsibility," said Dr. Paul Coreil, LSU AgCenter vice chancellor for extension. "This event provides young people with the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned."

Samantha Little, 9, said responsibility is just one of the traits she’s learned by being involved in 4-H.

"We are always learning about being a person of good character from Mr. Fontenot," Little said of her 4-H agent.

Jacob Fontenot, an LSU AgCenter 4-H agent from Cameron Parish, said he teaches character education as part of his 4-H clinics and meetings.

State Rep. Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe, said he is proud of Little and the other young people who participated in the State Horse Show.

"These youth are the best of the best," Walsworth said. "They are the future of our state, and events like this are helping teach them how to become respected adults who will make our state proud."

Competition was strong in contests ranging from roping to riding to public speaking. Winners from Louisiana will join other 4-H’ers from across the South for the Southern Regional 4-H Championship Horse Show and Contest in Montgomery, Ala., Aug. 2-6.
