The LSU AgCenter and others will offer workshops focused on risk management for nursery growers July 25 in Baton Rouge and July 26 in Hammond.
Coordinated by the LSU AgCenter in cooperation with the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association, the University of Florida, Nursery Crop Insurance Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency, the workshops will follow a theme of "Risk Management and Financial Analysis," according to LSU AgCenter horticulturist Dr. Allen Owings.
Topics to be covered include general risk management principles, business and financial management tools, crop insurance and computer-based tools for horticulture business analysis. Guest speakers will be Dr. John Haydu and Dr. Alan Hodges from the University of Florida and Dr. Laurence Crane from National Crop Insurance Services.
The July 25 workshop will be at the LSU AgCenter’s Burden Center on Essen Lane in Baton Rouge, and the July 26 workshop will be at the AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station on Old Covington Highway in Hammond. Check-in for the meetings will begin at 8:30 a.m. both days, and the program will begin at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided, and the workshops will end at 3 p.m.
"This is a great opportunity for nursery growers to hear the latest on insurance, profitability, falling crop prices and natural disaster protection and recovery," Owings said.
To assist in planning for lunch and printed material that will be provided, those interested in attending are asked to register for the workshops by July 20. The $15 registration fee covers lunch and printed material for participants.
