The LSU AgCenter has four field days slated for South Louisiana rice farmers in July.
The first will be the Southwest Louisiana Rice tour Wednesday (July 6) for farmers in Allen, Jefferson Davis, Calcasieu, Cameron and Beauregard parishes. It will start at 9 a.m. at the Fenton Elementary School, include stops at three farms and then end at Iowa High School.
LSU AgCenter speakers for that field day include Eddie Eskew, county agent for rice in the five parishes; rice breeders Dr. Steve Linscombe, Dr. Qi Ren Chu and Dr. Xueyan Sha; rice specialist Dr. Johnny Saichuk;, economist Dr. Mike Salassi and plant pathologist Dr. Don Groth.
In addition, also on Wednesday (July 6), the Vermilion Parish Rice Field Tour, along with a Master Farmer Model Farm Field Day, will be held at 3 p.m.
That starts at Ted Girouard’s rice verification field, 1.5 miles north of La. 14 on La. 13, north of the Kaplan area. Watch for the windmill in the rice field on the east side of the La. 13.
That Master Farmer field day ends at Errol Lounsberry’s model farm near Klondike.
Rice and crawfish producers from the Mermentau River watershed, who are enrolled in the Louisiana Master Farmer Program, will have the opportunity to complete Phase II of the program by attending the field day.
Topics to be discussed include a model farm overview, identification of water quality challenges and prescribed practices for rice and crawfish, conservation plan development, irrigation water management and other conservation-related topics.
Registration for the Master Farmer Model Farm Field Day will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. and is encouraged for Master Farmer participants to make sure they get credit and to make sure everyone gets a meal. On July 12, the Acadia Parish Rice and Soybean Field Day will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the LSU AgCenter Rice Research Station’s South Farm.
Speakers at that field day concerning rice will include LSU AgCenter county agent Ronnie Levy of Acadia Parish, weed scientist Dr. Eric Webster, entomologist Dr. Boris Castro, agronomist Dr. Jason Bond and crawfish specialist Dr. Ray McClain.
Regarding soybeans, the speakers will include LSU AgCenter county agent Barrett Courville of Acadia Parish, agronomist Dr. Jim Griffin, soybean specialist Dr. David Lanclos and entomologist Dr. Matt Bauer. In addition, Dan Dickan will discuss a runoff study being done by the state Department of Environmental Quality.
Finally, on July 13, the Evangeline Parish Rice Field Day will begin at 9 a.m. at Larry and Kody Bieber’s farm on Bieber Road, a mile west of Mamou. Speakers will include Castro, Lanclos, Linscombe, Chu, Sha, Groth and Saichuk.
