BOSSIER CITY – Greenhouse tomato growers will learn how to grow more profitable crops during the LSU AgCenter’s 9th Annual Greenhouse Tomato Seminar slated for Feb. 25.

There is no registration fee for the seminar, which begins at 1 p.m. at LSU AgCenter’s Red River Research Station.

Dr. H.Y. Hanna, an LSU AgCenter researcher at the station, said the seminar will be full of valuable information dealing directly with growing greenhouse tomatoes.

"Using raised gutters for growing good greenhouse tomatoes is one topic we will discuss," Hanna said. "This is a recent innovation in the greenhouse tomato industry that can make a difference in limited space operations."

In addition to that discussion, Hanna also will speak on ways to optimize yields and profits from greenhouse tomatoes. Dr. Randy Sanderlin, a plant pathologist at the LSU AgCenter’s Pecan Research and Extension Station, will speak about greenhouse tomato diseases and control measures. There also will be a discussion on greenhouse tomato insects and control measures.

A hands-on mini workshop will be given to show greenhouse tomato growers better ways to produce healthy transplants – as well as how to clean, disinfect and recycle the growing media they use in their greenhouses. Participants in the workshop also will learn how to use and calibrate Electrical Conductivity (EC) meters, as well as pH meters. And the workshop will include a lesson on media and nutrient analysis, as well as pruning the suckers and fruit clusters.

Hanna also will explain a technology he has developed to reduce the labor involved in dropping and leaning tomato plants in greenhouses.

The seminar will end with a tour of the LSU AgCenter’s greenhouses.
