The LSU AgCenter has a variety of information available to help you both before and after flooding.
Some of the information is available in both printed and Web formats, but the most up-to-date information is posted on the "Louisiana Floods" section of the LSU AgCenter Internet site.
Readily accessible by visiting LouisianaFloods.org, the site contains links to information on issues ranging from determining whether your property is in a flood-prone area to how to recover after a flood.
"LouisianaFloods.org is designed to tell you what you need to know – to find out if a flood is about to hit you, to protect your home or business from rising water or to clean up and repair your home if water has gotten into it," explains LSU AgCenter disaster education coordinator Pat Skinner.
Some of its features include links to information from LSU AgCenter experts and others on such flood-proofing measures as sandbags, levees, elevating your home, flood "wraps" and much more.
The Web site also provides convenient ways for you to find out who has floodplain development responsibilities and flood response and recovery responsibilities in your community – and it provides contact information for those floodplain administrators and emergency managers.
In addition to those features, LouisianaFloods.org provides links that can help you find out whether your property is in a special flood hazards area, commonly referred to as "the flood zone."
"Most people know that being in the flood zone means you are required to have flood insurance. But they are less aware that properties in a flood zone are subject to development regulations that may not apply to properties outside the flood zone," Skinner points out. "Your community may have more stringent ordinances, but every community must meet the minimum standards for floodplain development that are posted on Louisianafloods.org."
After a major flood or hurricane, when Louisiana parishes have received federal disaster declarations, LouisianaFloods.org also provides connections to state and federal Web sites and resources for flood recovery and mitigation programs.
