The LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association are sponsoring a workshop for those interested in becoming certified as pesticide applicators in mosquito control.
The workshop will take place March 15-17 at the Holiday Inn South, 9940 Airline Highway, in Baton Rouge.
"The first two days will be classroom style at the hotel," explained LSU AgCenter pesticide safety specialist Dr. Mary Grodner. "The third day will be at the LSU AgCenter’s livestock barns on campus in Baton Rouge and will be a hands-on session during the morning."
The full workshop will begin at 1 p.m. March 15 and will conclude at noon March 17. The afternoon of March 17 will be devoted to the certification exam, which will be administered by the Louisiana Department and Forestry.
Grodner said the afternoon program on March 16 also will include a session for advanced applicators that already are certified. "But in order to receive recertification, those certified applicators also must attend the hands-on session the morning of March 17," she stressed.
A registration of $30 will be charged for each applicator who signs up in advance and is not a member of the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association (LMCA). That fee increases to $35 for nonmembers who register on site. The registration fee for LMCA members is $20.
The registration fees include lunch on March 17. Checks for fees should be made payable to LMCA. Payments also may be made by cash but not by credit card, according to Grodner.
Hotel rooms for participants are available at the Holiday Inn South in Baton Rouge at a rate of $65 per night for courtyard rooms. Phone (225) 924-7021 to make reservations.
The mosquito control training manuals are available from the LMCA. You may contact them in care of St. Tammany Parish Mosquito Control, 2800 A Terrace Avenue, Slidell, LA 70458 or by phoning (985) 649-7325. The cost is $10 for the manuals plus $5 shipping and handling.
"It would be advantageous for the applicator to have the training manual for study before the workshop," Grodner says.
The General Standards study guides are available from the LSU AgCenter by contacting Grodner at (225) 578-2180 or email@example.com. Those two manuals can be sent to you at a cost of $5 per manual ($10 total for both).
More information and registration material should be available soon through the LMCA’s Web site at www.lmca.us.
